Home Garage: Design Considerations

garage

Many people love to imagine how their dream home will look someday. The problem is that by “home” they usually mean “living room”, “kitchen” or “bedroom”. Surely enough, the garage is rarely a place where you bring your friends to, but after some time of navigating your car through a narrow space, not having enough room to put your stuff, you will realize that not giving the garage’s design the same attention you gave to the rest of the house was a big mistake. Let us make sure this never happens by looking at some of the things you can consider while designing the garage.

Put the Things into Perspective

Today, the vast majority of families own 1-2 cars. You have to bear in mind, though, that these numbers are not set in stone, and that you may, at some point, need room for a bike, or even a company vehicle. That does not mean that you will have to build some monstrous garage and satisfy all these needs at once. As for now, you want to make it practical, with enough room to move freely when you are inside, as well as some functional storage units, but you should always leave enough space for possible expansions.

Set up the Perfect Height

While designing a garage, people usually make plans how they can use the available floor space, but fail to notice the importance of the third dimension, which can easily turn out to be a big mistake. You might, for example, start attending truck and machinery auctions and find a vehicle or a piece of equipment which you cannot possibly fit into your garage due to its excessive height. Or you may notice that the storage space is running dangerously low and decide to make a hanging bike rack or install another shelf above the existing ones. If you make your garage just a little bit higher from the get-go, all of these things will be possible.

Choose the Right Doors and Windows

garage doorsPutting the looks aside, the main thing you should consider before spending any money on doors and windows is the question of the available space. Among different types of garage doors, the canopy ones may be the simplest and the most common solution, but they do need the largest clearance, too. If you are short on space, you should probably opt for sectional or even roller doors. As for the windows, they should allow a lot of natural light and be placed high enough so they are immune to the prying eyes. For increased safety, window bars are always a welcomed addition.

Try Building the Attic

It may occur that, in spite all of your efforts and upgrades, your garage is still not able to fulfill its storage duties. In that case, you should probably opt for building the attic. Not only will you finally be able to move all the seasonal items out of sight, but you’ll also get a very appealing visual upgrade. Why would you have an ordinary garage, when you can turn it into something much livelier, and, if you want to, almost barn-like?

Make the Most out of the Interior

If you want to make room for more than one vehicle, you should avoid placing robust furniture pieces in your garage as much as possible. In addition to this, you can make few inbuilt garage interiorclosets while you are still building the garage, as they will prove to be much less of an obstacle than the regular pieces, and you will also get a safer place to store some of your more expensive tools.

Although it is far from being the most important part of your house, the garage has its own share or perks, and the more effort you put into its design, the list of amenities it has to offer will grow. Take some time to see what upgrades you can have, try using the vertical space as much as possible and your garage will become much more than a place where you just park your car.

Tips On How To Improve Indoor Air Quality

indoor air quality

Keeping your home clean and healthy is not an easy thing to do as harmful bacteria, viruses and toxins are lurking from each corner. Therefore, you need to clean it on a regular basis to prevent any issues that might occur due to various pollutants. Cleaning surfaces is not nearly enough to keep your home toxin-free. It’s important to pay attention to the quality of the air you’re breathing if you want to make your home truly safe and healthy.

There are several ways to ensure a good ventilation and high quality air in your home. If you want to do everything you can in order to breathe healthy, read these essential tips on how to improve indoor air quality.

One of the best methods to remove pollutants from the indoor air is duct cleaning. There are many reasons to clean the ducts, but the most important one is the fact that dust mites live inside the heating and cooling ducts from which they enter your home and travel to carpets, mattresses and air, causing respiratory issues and allergies.

How frequently should you clean the ducts? It should be done once per year, but whenever you notice mold on heating and cooling components, you should do it immediately. A proper cleaning includes cleaning all of the components and the inside of the heating and ventilating system and applying disinfectant.

Having your air ducts cleaned won’t endanger your health if it’s done properly. So, if you don’t have experience in duct cleaning and you don’t have the necessary tools, it would be probably best to call the professionals who will get everything out of your ducts: harmful microbes, mould, dead insects and small animals, dust mites and debris.

Here’s another good tip: minimize the use of dangerous chemicals. Cleaning products are full of ingredients that can harm your skin and lungs. Always choose low-emitting, green and safe products that have been labeled with Green Seal. If possible, make your own cleaning products, based on lavender, lemon and vinegar.

Dust mites are attracted to warm and humid air, so make sure that you keep your home dry. Relative humidity levels should be lower than 50 percent (somewhere between 30 and 50). If you live in extremely humid climate, think about using dehumidifiers to control moisture and allergens. Make sure that there are no water leaks and open windows after you take a bath.

essential oilsWe all love when our homes smell nice. However, using synthetic fragrances is never a good idea. Chemicals that can be found in air fresheners are far from safe and they are rarely listed on the labels. Avoid risks of using synthetic scents and use only 100 percent organic, natural fresheners or perfume the air in your home with essential oils or slices of lemon or orange.

The last, but not the least important tip (and certainly the easiest one): always open the windows (at least 15 minutes per day) and let fresh air into all rooms. Also, don’t smoke in your home. Smoking cigarettes will surely decrease the quality of indoor air as cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 harmful chemicals!

Updating Your Home: Six Important Things That Homeowners Often Forget About

The family home should be a comfortable haven from the cares of the world. Sometimes, however, it becomes so cozy and familiar that we forget to update it when needed. Here are six important updates to consider for your home to avoid unnecessary costs or repairs.

Exterior home improvement project includes replacement windows

Flooring

If your carpets have developed an odor or your wood floors are faded, it may be time to replace or repair them. Not only will those rooms get a new and fresher look, but new flooring can help to maintain the integrity of the floorboards beneath the covering of tiles or carpet. Deteriorating floorboards can be hazardous. If your flooring is old and dilapidated, consider replacing it and check what’s underneath.

Lighting

Although lightbulbs can be changed to maintain adequate lighting in a home, a family’s needs may change. For example, better lighting may be needed in the children’s nursery or play area, or if a household member has vision issues. As we get older, enhanced lighting helps to prevent falls and illuminate nooks and crannies where dust collects for cleaning.

HVAC

An aging HVAC system may not work as efficiently as it used to, raising the heating or electric bill. If more rooms are used in the home for kids or guests, added heat or cooling may be needed. Have your HVAC system checked to see if it needs to be updated, especially before it breaks down. Professionals like those at Cape Fear Air Conditioning & Heating Co., Inc. can help with repairs and installations when needed.

Windows and doorsHome Remodel Project front entrance_cedar siding_windows

A home’s windows and doors can begin to let air into the house over time. The weather stripping can erode, or window frames can deteriorate. Window frames and door frames should be checked for leakage and signs of wear that could cause problems. Replacing old windows with new, energy-efficient ones can also save you on your utility bills.

Roof and exterior

Heavy storms sometimes seriously damage a home’s roof or siding, requiring immediate repair. But even without storm damage, over time roof shingles can chip or fall off, letting air and moisture into the home. The same can happen with the structure’s siding and moldings. Periodically it is important to have a professional roofing and siding expert check to see if problems have developed. At an early stage, damage is usually easier and cheaper to fix, and it may help to prevent more expensive repairs later.

Lawn care

Inspect the lawn every year or two to remove dead trees or shrubs. Check the lawn for signs of insect or pest infestation to prevent major issues. You may have a problem that doesn’t look like an issue from the outside, so it’s important to perform maintenance in your yard periodically.

Look for signs of damage in these areas regularly so you can cut costs. Updating important areas in your home before they become a major issues can save you both time and money.

Comparing and Picking Roofing Types

roofing

Whether you’re building a new home, renovating or just need to re-shingle, there are many elements to consider — such as price, durability and style — when looking at roofing types.

Let’s take a look at some of your roofing material options.

Asphalt

Asphalt is the most commonly used material on roofs — probably because it’s the most cost effective, comes in many colors and makes roofing relatively easy to install.

The granules are the part of the roofing shingle that offer UV protection, and they also provide the color you want your roof to have.

The next layer is the asphalt coating, which is the portion of the shingle that provides waterproofing qualities. The thickness of this layer varies depending on the weight of the shingle.

Another valuable quality of asphalt shingles is that the majority can resist winds of more than 60 miles per hour.

On average, asphalt shingles last approximately 20 years.

Metal

The types of metal used for roofs are aluminum, copper, steel or zinc alloy. One of the advantages to a metal roof is the light but robust material doesn’t absorb the sun’s rays. Instead, it reflects the heat, and the surface cools down quickly once the sun sets. This results in low energy costs for for heating and cooling your home.

Metal roofing is more expensive than asphalt shingles. However, the lifetime for a metal roof far surpasses that of shingles — lasting anywhere from 30-50 years.

Clay Tiles

This type of roof has been around for thousands of years. They were first used in China and the Middle East starting around 10,000 BCE. They remain in use because they continue to work well, even in the present day.

Clay tiles are fire resistant and can tolerate harsh weather conditions. They also shed heat from the summer sun and insulate during the winter months. Clay tiles, however, are heavy and must have a reinforced roof frame to support them.

Clay Tiles give a home a traditional Spanish or Italian look. They can last anywhere from 50 to 70 years, but they can be quite expensive to install.

Wood

This organic material has a natural ability to help keep your home cool in the summer and warm in winter. Wood also gives an earthy look to a home, and the wood fibers create an extra layer of insulation.

This material does require some maintenance, however. For instance, the wood will need to be re-oiled periodically and cleaned to remove the growth of any moss or mildew. Another thing to keep in mind with wood roofing is that it does have good wind resistance, but it’s not very fire resistant.

Wood roofs that are properly installed and maintained can last 30+ years, but they can be expensive to put on.

Slateroof slate

This durable material makes for a wind and fire resistant roof. However, it comes with a big price tag — and weight.

A specially-trained installer must also be hired for the roof’s installation. Once it is installed, a slate roof can last 75+ years — it’s by far the longest lasting, but it’s also the most expensive.

Choosing a roof type is an important decision. If it’s done right, your roof will keep your home safe from the elements for years to come.

How Glass Balustrades can add that Extra Touch to your Loft Apartment

Loft living is a popular way for many people to live. On one hand, it offers versatility and flexibility within a space but, without clever interior design and use of space, it can be unappealing – after all who wants to live in a cold looking and feeling space?

Creating a warm, open plan living space is easy with a few simple hints and tricks that make the space work in compartments, without necessarily segmenting sections with walls. Balustrade Components are adept at working in interior and exterior spaces, making them the exact kind of space you want and need.

loft living

Loft living – what is it?

Once the preserve of artists and bohemians, loft living is now a sought after way of living in a space. Think open plan but with greater magnitude and impact.

In the 70s, many homes were built with this open plan feel. It was an interior design pattern that encouraged the flow of life through a space. Instead of the traditional separate spaces, such as a living room and lounge, the wall was no longer there.

The bricks and mortar interior walls were replaced with room dividers, such as bookcases and so on. The idea was simple – it offered some kind of barrier to a space so that you could denote the separateness of it. These room dividers offered a modicum of privacy in an otherwise open space.

Loft living is about having no divides. The space is open and cavernous. The kitchen is fixed; the bedroom may not be the secluded room you had always thought it should or needed to be. The space is maximised in terms of floor space, and height too in many cases.

Older buildings, abandoned warehouses and dock side buildings, once the hub bub of industry, have now been reclaimed, offering open space to everyone who enjoys living this way.

It is not to everyone’s taste. It can feel too vast, too open, too relaxed and informal. Some people feel safe in the tradition of shutting a door on a space, only entering that space when they want or need to.

For those that love loft living, there are many different additions and design concepts they can add to make their loft apartment truly their own.

Add sparks of interest with focal points

Loft living does not necessarily mean living on the surface of the moon. It doesn’t need to be minimalist, empty and barren. However, even with the biggest sofa in the world in it, if your loft apartment still feels empty and wasted then you need to add a spark of interest.

One way that designers suggest you do this, is to add a focal point (or two). When a space feels empty, it may be because the eye has nothing to fall upon or focus on. There are many ways of doing this:

  • Choose a material and make that the design centre piece

Glass, for example, is a versatile material that packs a punch in all situations, both interior and exterior. For loft apartments with more than one level, a glass balustrade for staircases and mezzanine levels is the perfect way of adding structure to a space so that the eye can focus.

Glass does not block light and neither does it create a barrier that is too absolute, like a wall or room dividers such as book cases.

By choosing one material and using it throughout the space, it creates a theme that was missing previously. Glass also fits with traditional or modernist, minimal design and unlike other materials, there is no need to use it sparingly.

  • Colourloft apartment

The biggest advantage of loft living is that the darkest, most dramatic colours work exceptionally well in this space. Some people prefer to keep their loft apartment devoid of colour but, if you feel it lacks warmth and focus, a dramatic feature wall can make all the difference.

Colour, of course, does not have to be for the walls only. The ceiling, if high, can be ‘brought down’ by the addition of colour and you can add plenty of colour to the floor space too. The use of rugs on hard floors is a perfect example.

  • Art installationsglass sculpture

Many people use sculptures and art to add interest and focus to an otherwise cavernous space. Glass sculptures, with their various colours and form, can allow light to bounce around a space, changing it from an ordinary place to something simply extraordinary.

Is your loft apartment lacking form and structure? Glass balustrades can add form and appeal to any space, but look great in a loft apartment.

How to Beautify Your Yard in Just a Few Steps

garden

First impressions are lasting impressions, and the first area family and friends see when they come to your home is the yard that surrounds it. Having an attractive lawn does not have to be difficult. There are a few basic and very simple steps that can be taken immediately to get your yard well on the way to becoming a major focal point of your residence.  Having a welcoming and prim yard can do lots for your home’s aesthetic appeal.  If you want to sell your home at some point, investing the time and money to make your yard look good is very much worth it.

Clean It Up

Taking the time and putting forth the effort to cut the grass, rake the leaves, trim the bushes, and clean out flower beds is well worth it. These things will make your home look loved and well-tended. Other duties such as pressure-washing hard surfaces, adding and manicuring flower beds, purchasing accessories, and putting in pathway pavers can be done as needed, or when you have the extra time. If you just take a few minutes each day to clean and maintain this area, the results will be consistent and amazing. Enlist the help of all family members to make this area something that everyone in the neighborhood can be proud of.

Trim the Trees

Overhanging branches can be a danger and can also become very expensive if they fall on your roof or other structures during high winds or storms. Your older trees may look awkward and unbalanced, with limbs growing every which way. Whatever the case, it is always best to call in the professionals, like those at Smitty’s Tree Service Inc, to diagnose and treat diseased or infested trees. Experts will have the proper equipment and safety gear to get the job done quickly and efficiently, and your yard will look so much better for it. Getting your trees removed may also be a necessity, especially if you have old or dead ones mucking up your yard.

Add Colorgazebo

Green is a gorgeous color, but can become very bland when standing alone. Set off your lawn, trees, and bushes with pops of bright color. Add plants, flowers, twinkle lights, and even hanging lanterns to give your yard more personality and pizzazz. Color can also be added through lawn furniture and cushions, pots and planters, and even interesting statues and lawn ornaments.  Some people like using lawn gnomes or flamingos to add some life to their yard.  Fake deer and other animals have also become popular in recent years.

Having an attractive yard is something that can be done in very simple steps. You will not have to be overwhelmed and some tasks, such as the tree trimming which can be done by the experts that are trained to do it. Other tasks can be delegated out to additional companies who will be able to assist you.  Making your yard beautiful is something that everyone can achieve.

3 Common Heater Problems You Can Fix Yourself

A malfunctioning heater can be a serious problem, especially in the winter months when you need the heater to keep your house warm. Instead of calling a repair company to fix the heater, you can save some time and money by troubleshooting the problem yourself. Although there are a number of reasons why your heater is not working properly, investigating three common problems can help you to diagnose and fix your system as soon as possible.

winter-home

Check the Thermostat

One of the most common causes of a heater problem is the thermostat, which is the device that regulates the temperature in your home. The first step is to make sure the thermostat is turned on and has power. If you have a digital thermostat, ensure the screen is not blank and then check the wires behind the device to see if they are securely connected. If necessary, replace the thermostat’s batteries, reconnect the device to the wall outlet or secure the wires.

If your thermostat has power, the second troubleshooting step is to check the settings. If the settings are wrong, your heater may only work periodically or not at all. For example, if you inadvertently set the temperature too low, your home will remain cold. Review your thermostat’s user manual to get the exact directions to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home.

Heating Duct Problems

Your home’s heating ductwork is an integral part of the HVAC system because it circulates air throughout your home. Professionals, like those at Princeton heater repair, can offer expert advice and solutions regarding heating issues. Even the most powerful heater can be ineffective if the ductwork is failing. There are several reasons why your home’s ducts are not circulating enough air to keep your home warm.

If the ducts are dirty from dust, grime, debris, and pollutants, air will not be able to flow through your home. Cleaning your ducts can significantly improve the air circulation in your home. In addition, ducts that are torn, twisted, kinked, and ripped can also prevent air from circulating through your home or simply leak enough air to cause a major inefficiency in the heating system. Repairing these problems, such as kinks and tears, can restore your home’s air circulation to proper levels.

Check the Filter

Another common problem that is easily fixed is a dirty air filter. A clogged air filter can severely limit the flow of air from the heater, which can eventually cause the heater to overheat and shut down. Regularly checking the filter and replacing it when necessary can eliminate this particular problem from ever becoming a serious issue.

Although some heating problems require professional help, troubleshooting your heater can help to keep your heating costs down and also give you a better understanding of how your heating system operates.

9 Interior Design Trends for 2016

interior design trends

We all want to live in a space that is pleasant and practical. Like many things, trends come and go; some make our lives distinctly easier and more pleasant, and others are no more than a passing fad.

But as we ease ourselves into 2016. Balustrade Components wonder what the year will bring in terms of interior design trends. We have done our research and think that we have identified the top nine interior design trends from the coming year.

#1 Two-tone kitchens

The kitchen is a busy room but this does not mean that it should be devoid of colour, or interest. And this is why we are loving the idea of two-tone, complimenting kitchen cupboards.

Using lighter tones and colour for the top cupboard doors, and darker shades for the bottom cupboards, we love the modem, upbeat look it gives the modern kitchen. Relatively inexpensive too – all you need to do is buy and fit new doors – with a fresh coat of paint on the walls and maybe some new tiles, your kitchen can go from underwhelming to glam in less than a day.

#2 Glass balustrades – inside and out

With predictions that this year will be the hottest/warmest on record, we think that we will be living outside far more.

This, if scientists are correct, could be something that we need to get used to and thus, glass balustrades will be an important safety and design features at many homes and businesses.

Sometimes, you also want to be able to see what is on the other side etc. and thus, glass balustrades make the perfect option. Easy to clean, they make for a chic and welcome addition to any home, business or garden.

#3 Formal dining rooms

Who doesn’t love or is failed to be impressed by a well-dressed dining table? As we eat with our eyes first and our stomachs second, we think that the fashion for a formal dining space or room is a great one.

If you do have the space, or indeed a separate room, the interior design for 2016 is to create the space to become the formal space that we sometimes need it to be. Think glass chandeliers, think traditional colour palettes, think high backed seating and yes, you can shop for table cloths.

#4 Statement mirrors in the bathroom

The bathroom is another room in the house that needs attention every now and then. If you want to update the look, the must-have accessory for this year is a statement mirror.

Ditch the ordinary, practical, frameless mirror and look for some of the more kitsch examples available – you know the kind, mirrors in very old picture frames, ships wheels and so on.

But, it wouldn’t be a trend unless there was something a little different about it and this year, you need to think about how you hang these mirrors. For the first time in a long time, the hooks and so on can be on show – so opt for the out of the ordinary with these too.

#5 Ditch the tech in the lounge

We can hear the audible gasps and we understand your concern but, with so many articles and discussions about our supposed addiction to technology, it seems that interior design is also trying to help out the tech Vs. family balance.

Thus, if you can and are brave enough, have at least one room or space that is meant for the family and people, with NO tech in it.

#6 Sunroomssunroom

If you are planning on 2016 being the year that you add an extension to your property, you could do worse than add a sunroom. Just like a conservatory but with more structure, opt for vast windows that allow the sun and light to pour in. Keep the interior minimal with light, cool colours.

#7 Pizzazz in the cloak room

Yes, you read that right. The downstairs loo or cloakroom, so often the very poor relation in any household is the blank canvas and thus, if you fancy letting loose with amazing wallpaper and out of this world accessories, then take yourself to the smallest room in the house.

We have seen amazing designs with all black wallpaper, huge mirrors and bright colour accessories.

#8 Attention-seeking in the bedroommaster-bedroom

We all know how the bedroom should be a place of peace and tranquillity. And this has not changed but create something different by marking the space behind and above the bed with something different.

Use real, rustic wood or opt for very elaborate wallpaper and create a look that is to die for.

#9 And finally, the hallway

An organised hallway is something we all hanker after and 2016 is the year to go for it. Think postal sorting offices with a range of boxes on the wall that make putting shoes away a breeze – and never lose your gloves again…

7 Designs for Creating a More Relaxing Atmosphere At Home

spa bathroom

Our lives have become very stressful and fast paced due to work, family obligations and numerous other responsibilities. It is so important to make a concerted effort to take time to decompress, slow down and relax at the end of the day. One way to relax is to create a peaceful atmosphere at home that begins as soon as you walk through the front door. Make an assessment of your home. A space that is disorganized, full of discord and chaotic does not contribute to a sense of peace and should be removed. A relaxing atmosphere should be one that is harmonious, peaceful and tranquil. It should be designed to feel like a retreat after the hustle and bustle of a busy and stressful day. Everything from the furniture in the home to the colors of the room are key elements in creating a peaceful environment. Consider these seven additions that create a more relaxing atmosphere in the home.

Shower

Designing a shower that intensifies your daily experience is key. Upgrade the space with steam features, multiple showerheads and wall mounted body sprays to create a spa-like atmosphere. Be sure to include a seating bench in your shower for added comfort.

Meditation Garden

A meditation garden should be an outdoor retreat tucked away in a private section of the yard. It should invoke a sense of calmness and serenity when entered. Include comfortable seating, fire pit and water feature as well as a beautiful array of greenery in various sizes, textures and colors.

Sauna

Another great way to create a relaxing atmosphere in the home is with the installation of an indoor sauna. Significant health benefits include the improvement of blood circulation and the maintaining of muscle tone. Saunas are also instrumental in helping the body recover after an intense workout.

feng shui

Feng Shui

Translated from Chinese to mean “wind-water” this ancient art teaches how to design your space to enjoy better health and comfort while giving your home a more peaceful and harmonious vibe.

Bedroom Window Seat

The bedroom is the most intimate room in the home. Many of us love to spend time in our bedroom watching television and spending quality time with the family. Add a comfortable upholstered window seat perfect for gazing at the stars at night or catching up with a favorite book. To make it luxurious, add faux fur pillows and a mink throw.

Outdoor Spa

There is no better way to relieve your tired muscles than with the addition of a soothing and relaxing outdoor spa. Outdoor spas are ideal for year-round family use and great for private time with a loved one. Companies like Robert Allen Pools and Spas offer a variety of designs, shapes and sizes that fit any backyard space. Soak your cares away in the comfort of a home spa.

Lighting

Lighting is an important element in a room. It not only uplifts our spirits, but effects our mood and mental health. Light at lower levels will create a sense of warmth and intimacy. Select table lamps, decorative wall sconces, recessed or track lighting. Install a dimmer on ceiling fixtures to set the mood for the space. This will create a soothing and calming place to relax.

Designing a space is a very personal decision. Take the time to think about what you would like to have in your home that will allow you to relax and enjoy a better quality of life. Think about how you want to make the transformations. The result will be a calm and peaceful retreat that you will want to spend the majority of your time in. It’s your space, make it your own.
