3 Simple Improvements to Boost Your Home’s Value

The term “home improvement” has a tendency to evoke images of new decks, added rooms, replaced appliances, or remodeled rooms. However, if your schedule or budget don’t allow for a major project, there are a number of simple, cheap ways you can improve your home and improve its value. Here are some of the best options for a quick value boost when trying to sell your home.

  1. Paint an Accent Wall3 Simple Improvements to Boost Your Home’s Value

Many homes have the same, neutral, bland paint throughout the house. Though this does offer a clean feel, it does not grab the buyer’s attention. It can make the home look generic and therefore less valuable. To mitigate that effect, find a small wall that can be painted an accent color.

Some good locations might be the entry way (to make a good first impression), the back wall of the kitchen, the back wall of the dining or living room, or a wall that edges the stairs.

For even greater intrigue, you can use a sea sponge to create the popular sponge-painting effect. This is best done in the space between the kitchen cabinets and the counter tops. If you really want to save money, check out the clearance tables in home improvement stores’ paint sections. When paint is mixed incorrectly, it is marked down up to 90% off the original price. Just be sure you will have enough paint as this mistake color cannot be replicated.

  1. Exchange Mirrors

Bathrooms are an ideal place to make your home look more valuable. When people see beautiful bathroom spaces, the home looks unique and more expensive. For this effect, remove any plain mirrors. Mirrors with no or small frames look cheap to your potential buyers. Go out, shop the sales, and look for more ornately framed pieces.

Of course, some of these can be costly, but if you’re a savvy shopper, you will be able to get them for a good price. Or, if you’re particularly crafty, you can take your old, frameless mirrors and visit a craft store for a cheap, beautiful frame and simply put the pieces together.

  1. Update Your Lighting Fixtures

Nothing says “valuable” like a chandelier. While some chandeliers can cost a pretty penny, you can also find inexpensive chandeliers that make your home look great on a budget. You may also want to consider purchasing accent lights for areas like the kitchen, entryway, and dining area. Colorful blown glass lights are a great option for the smaller spaces.

Again, you should be shopping the sales. Don’t go straight into a high-end store with no coupon. If you want to increase the value of your home without breaking the bank, perusing the clearance and sale items is key.

In actuality, value-increasing home improvements do not have to be expensive. The goal is to make your home look clean, unique, classy, and lived in. For added effects, you can have cookies baking in the oven whenever your house is shown or keep a bowl of fruit on the counter. Little details that tell potential buyers that this house could feel like home can only help. So add color, make your bathrooms more elegant, and wow them with your lighting fixtures. You’ll have a satisfactory sale in no time.

How to Turn Your Bedroom into an Oasis of Rest

bedroom oasis

Every room in your house has a specific function, and the bedroom has the most important one of all – to allow you to rest and gather energy for new challenges. It is very important that the room reflects its function with its décor. Your bedroom should be cozy, soft and pleasant to be in, as well as relaxing for the eyes and free of all modern day distractions. If you are looking for ways to update your bedroom décor and make it a true resting oasis, we will help you with that.

Go for Neutral Color Scheme

Highly saturated hues are tiresome for the eyes and they can increase anxiety and thus worsen the quality of your sleep and rest time. Pastels, greens, lavender and subtle blue hues are recommended for the bedroom, but you can skip all those complications and opt for an entirely neutral room. Not only will they be soothing for your eyes, but also easy to decorate.

Add a Gallery Wall

A stylish gallery wall may be just what your bedroom needs in order to reach its full potential. We usually decorate focus walls only in our living rooms, but there is no reason not to include them in your bedroom, as well. All you need to do is choose a perfect place for it. Placing it directly in front of your bed can be a bit conspicuous, while setting it behind your bed may be completely useless. Therefore, display lovely and subtle artwork on some of the walls on the sides of the room, and wake up to your favorite pieces each day.

Headboard Makes All the Difference

A well-chosen headboard might be the thing you need to bring the whole room together. It creates a visual focal point and makes the space look truly finished. You do not even have to invest in a whole new frame; just decide for a separate headboard. The size and the material will depend on the dimensions of the room, as well as the prevailing theme and fabrics throughout the bedroom.

Change Your Linens

Changing your sheets regularly goes without saying. However, opting for some new linen can be just what you need, especially if you are decorating your space on a tight budget. Choose bold patterns or rich colors that will truly make a difference in the room.

Update Your Bed

The bed is a quintessential element of your bedroom, and any update done on it can only contribute to improving the room ambience. Choosing a comfy king single mattress will make resting and sleeping a lot easier. Additionally, if you add a stylish canopy, your bed will become a true oasis of peace. A bed bench is another interesting way to improve the appearance and functionality of your bed.

bedroom pillows

Create a Seating Area

A large bedroom could benefit from a cozy seating area. It can be an ideal place to drink your morning coffee, eat your lazy day breakfast, or curl up with your favorite book. Speaking of books, you can take the seating area to a whole new level, by creating a full blown reading nook.

Add a Dressing Table

It is a win-win investment – you will clear up some space in your bathroom and you will be able to get ready in your room instead of waiting in line for the bathroom to be empty. Also, incorporating a vanity can add your bedroom a touch of hotel-chic, making it more sophisticated and luxurious.

Hang a Statement Chandelier

If you want to add a bit of glamour to your bedroom interior, do that by simply installing a striking and elegant lighting fixture. Depending on your overall décor, you can decide for an antique crystal chandelier or a wooden ceiling fan (if you prefer the naturalistic style).

Your room is just a few steps away from becoming a peaceful oasis you have always dreamed it will be. Do not give up now, and start redecorating as soon as possible. Sleep well, rest often.

Four DIY Hacks to Improve Your Home’s Ambiance

DIY hacks to improve your home's ambiance

Everyone desires an elegantly-designed home, but not everyone has the money to hire a professional decorator. Some of us do not even have the budget to replace our home’s accent pieces to create a new look. Fortunately, with a few do-it-yourself hacks, you can create a classy feel to your home without breaking the bank. Here are a few tricks you can try today:

Use A Painted Drawer for a Decorative Shelf

Do you have an old dresser that is not in the best shape or that you simply do not use anymore? Try using some of the bureau’s drawers to create beautifully-decorated shelves for your bedroom and living room. You can paint them any color to match your current theme, or, if they are wooden, you can stain and varnish them. You can even try the “distressed wood” look that is in vogue right now. This especially works if the dresser was vintage or antique and it already has old-fashioned decals and handles.

The best part about using a drawer as a shelf has to be the fact that it is already assembled. So, even if you are not the most handy person, all you really need to worry about is hanging the unit securely. There is no building required!

Hang Woven Baskets on a Wall for Bath Linen Storage

In order to bring this idea to life in the most stylish way possible, be sure to hang your baskets so that the open side faces out toward your bathroom. If done this way, this cool hack actually makes storage look decorative rather than crowded and cluttered. To add even more storage space, you can even try rolling towels rather than simply folding them. You do this by folding them in half length-wise and then rolling them into a cylinder shape. Then stack the cylinders so that the circular side faces outward.

These baskets will exude a country farmhouse charm that can be accented with candles and potpourri. They can even be painted to match your knickknacks and shower curtain to complete an overarching design theme. Not to mention, these hanging towel racks can actually take the place of wall hangings, eliminating two unique bathroom decorating issues instead of just one!

Etch Mason Jars for Personalized Drinking Glasses

Using mason jars as cocktail glasses and beer mugs is a huge trend right now. This can be seen everywhere from house parties to the neighborhood bar. However, besides being on the pulse of a new fashion, using mason jars for barware can save you a ton of money. They are inexpensive and can be purchased in most craft stores for a fraction of the price of typical glasses. As a matter of fact, they are versatile, while traditional glasses are made for each cocktail type, and collecting each type of glass can be costly.

Using chemicals, you can easily etch different and creative designs on your mason jars so that your personal “bar set” is uniquely yours. You can even up the etched glass ante by stenciling the names of everyone in your household (and the names of a few close friends) on their own personal jars that they can use exclusively.

Use Old Door Knobs for Hanging Coats

Have you recently replaced a door and instantly filled up with regret because you admired its beautiful vintage knob? You can actually use this knob and others that you can easily find in any secondhand store to create custom coat rack hooks. Brass knobs can also make great towel holders to coordinate with a brass-lined bathroom without busting your budget buying typical accents and accessories.

The nicest thing about this idea is that the knobs still appear elegant and add a touch of class to the room even if they are unoccupied by a coat or towel. Just be sure to match the knob with the room around it, so it looks as though it belongs there, and it is not just randomly coming out of the wall.

So, if you are unsure of how to decorate on a tight budget, these quick and simple ideas should get you headed in the right direction. Many of these base items are probably lying around your house already, or can be found at a craft or vintage store nearby. You just need to look at these items with a new set of eyes and see the potential they have to make your home beautiful today!

Hacks for Stylish yet Functional Home Office

Hacks for stylish yet functional home office

Even though up until recently, working from home wasn’t that common, this notion is getting more and more popular by the hour. There are many benefits that this kind of employment brings, like being your own boss and managing your own time and resources in the way you deem most fit. On the other hand, not all is milk and honey even here. Work at home can be too distracting for you to give it your best, which is why you cannot work so effectively from the living room, kitchen or bedroom. What you need is a functional and stylish home office to match both your needs and your home’s décor.

An actual office

home office

In a recent conversation with Office Furniture retailers from Sydney, it came to our attention, that optimal performance requires optimal work environment. This environment can however be obtained in two simple steps. First one is removing all the distraction from the office (all noisy and unnecessary equipment) and the second one is furnishing your office in the right manner. Your office chair needs to be of adequate quality in order not to hurt your posture and cause a pain in your back. Back pain is not only extremely inconvenient, but is also the most distracting thing imaginable. What you want from your performance is nothing but the best, which means that your tools to the trade must follow in suit.

Do not underestimate the power of visual!

One of the major tips is that you should never underestimate the power of visual stimuli. Sure, your workstation is always more important than a curtain or a carpet, but this doesn’t mean that you should just strip your room naked and add only work related items to it. First of all, this will significantly diminish your productivity, so what you should go for is a cozy and warm décor which will help you feel pleasant for your environment. Décor elements are not that distracting and they do affect your moral in a positive way. Because of this, apart from your usual work material, what you should also have in your office is a nice sofa or armchair, for you to relax on or even take an occasional nap. While you are at it, why not get a sofa which matches the rest of your office.

home office hacks

A good lighting solution is a must, since countless hours staring at the monitor with a bad illumination can have a devastating effect on your vision. However, taking a designer lighting will both remedy this and improve the visual impression that your home leaves.

A clean office is an imperative!

home office clean and organized

It is a known fact that the human mind responds negatively to a messy environment. Because of this, clutter in your room and especially on your desk should be absolutely unacceptable. For this reason, you need to clean your room at least few times a week and break clusters as soon as you notice them. Furthermore, seeing how you will have a multitude of office appliances turned on there will be a lot of cables under your desk (at least a computer, monitor, speakers, printer, phone charger). Unfortunately, even this counts as a mess. So, in order to remedy the situation, what you should do is find a way to organize them properly. Luckily, there are some simple, yet elegant DIY solutions to this persistent problem.

What can be deduced from all of this is that interior decoration, and calculated pragmatism must go hand in hand in order to give optimal results. Sure, at times, this may seem as simply too much work, but you need to think of it as an investment in your career and your professional advancement. In order to give it your best, you need all the help you can possibly get and making your home office into a perfect work environment is a first step on this journey of a thousand miles.

2016 Home Décor Trends to Watch For

home design trends

2015 has been an innovative and vibrant year – we have been introduced to some brilliant new ideas and designs, like the first 3-D printed furniture pieces, we have witnessed the comeback of some classic styles like the elegant minimalism and we have seen an array of different metals gracing entire room interiors bringing an edge to the soft home décor. This year, the winds are about to change, the buzz about the latest design trends has already begun and it will leave us begging for a renovation of our most beloved rooms. Here’s an outlook of what we can expect to see in this year’s showrooms;

Colors – 50 shades of purple

home decor trends

First of all, we need to sort out the color palette. We have seen a lot of natural tones in 2015, with beiges and alabasters being the base color of a room. This will give way to more lively colors this year and purple will be taking the lead. Look for decoration in various shades of pink, lavender, lilac or plum purple while shopping for drapery, lamp shades and cushions. In fact, the internationally acclaimed company Pantone has declared two new hottest colors for the year 2016: gentle nuances of pinkish cloud – rose quartz and the blue wonder – serenity.

Warm welcome – heated hallway floors

What better way to greet your guests then by a warm welcome? Literally, providing adjustable floor heating for your entrance room and hallways is a fantastic way to pimp up your home. This is a priceless perk for families with small children who spend most of their day time crawling around the house on all fours or playing time-consuming games on marble or stone floor. Wet winter footwear will no longer be a problem as the warm floors will dry your feet in a matter of minutes. Don’t worry, this option does not mean that summers will be intolerable or warmer – the marble will remain cool and pleasant as ever.

Mix and match – bringing outdoor materials indoors

home decor 2016

The industrial design has shown us how to make a room sharp by combining two to three different types of metal, however this year we are going to go for warmer options. Picture a bright living room which has dark oak wooden floors with a beautiful cozy rug in the center, a three piece beige couch with fluffed purple cushions and painted champagne-colored walls, all but one which is made entirely out of dark brown stone. This will give the room an entirely different dimension and still keep the room feeling inviting and warm.

Cooking heaven – open and spacious kitchens

Imagine feeling like a celebrity chef every time you prepare a meal in your own home – well, that is the key to this year’s hottest new kitchen designs. The room should be very open, preferably with a working island counter top in the middle of the room, separating the cooking from the dining area. Also, this year is all about mixing and matching so forget about the monochromatic, unified color schemes, instead go for different colors of bottom and top counter tops, just try and keep them in similar or compatible tones. For an extra touch of luxury, renew your kitchen by introducing new and specialized appliances like steam ovens or warming drawers – practical and stylish at the same time-

Back to basics – switching from virtual to spiritual

home trends

Another wonderful change we will be embracing this year is organizing your living room so it may be tech-free. We know it’s hard to imagine any focal room in the 21st century without a single electronic gadget: no TV sets, no Play Stations, no radios or computers. A room ideal for family night board games or quiet study sessions, it’s the place to go to when you need to cool your head and relax from the annoying buzzing and radiation that accompanies modern-day devices.

Be on the lookout for these new design settings in your local home décor salons and make your home as fashionable as it deserved to be.

9 Interior Design Trends for 2016

interior design trends

We all want to live in a space that is pleasant and practical. Like many things, trends come and go; some make our lives distinctly easier and more pleasant, and others are no more than a passing fad.

But as we ease ourselves into 2016. Balustrade Components wonder what the year will bring in terms of interior design trends. We have done our research and think that we have identified the top nine interior design trends from the coming year.

#1 Two-tone kitchens

The kitchen is a busy room but this does not mean that it should be devoid of colour, or interest. And this is why we are loving the idea of two-tone, complimenting kitchen cupboards.

Using lighter tones and colour for the top cupboard doors, and darker shades for the bottom cupboards, we love the modem, upbeat look it gives the modern kitchen. Relatively inexpensive too – all you need to do is buy and fit new doors – with a fresh coat of paint on the walls and maybe some new tiles, your kitchen can go from underwhelming to glam in less than a day.

#2 Glass balustrades – inside and out

With predictions that this year will be the hottest/warmest on record, we think that we will be living outside far more.

This, if scientists are correct, could be something that we need to get used to and thus, glass balustrades will be an important safety and design features at many homes and businesses.

Sometimes, you also want to be able to see what is on the other side etc. and thus, glass balustrades make the perfect option. Easy to clean, they make for a chic and welcome addition to any home, business or garden.

#3 Formal dining rooms

Who doesn’t love or is failed to be impressed by a well-dressed dining table? As we eat with our eyes first and our stomachs second, we think that the fashion for a formal dining space or room is a great one.

If you do have the space, or indeed a separate room, the interior design for 2016 is to create the space to become the formal space that we sometimes need it to be. Think glass chandeliers, think traditional colour palettes, think high backed seating and yes, you can shop for table cloths.

#4 Statement mirrors in the bathroom

The bathroom is another room in the house that needs attention every now and then. If you want to update the look, the must-have accessory for this year is a statement mirror.

Ditch the ordinary, practical, frameless mirror and look for some of the more kitsch examples available – you know the kind, mirrors in very old picture frames, ships wheels and so on.

But, it wouldn’t be a trend unless there was something a little different about it and this year, you need to think about how you hang these mirrors. For the first time in a long time, the hooks and so on can be on show – so opt for the out of the ordinary with these too.

#5 Ditch the tech in the lounge

We can hear the audible gasps and we understand your concern but, with so many articles and discussions about our supposed addiction to technology, it seems that interior design is also trying to help out the tech Vs. family balance.

Thus, if you can and are brave enough, have at least one room or space that is meant for the family and people, with NO tech in it.

#6 Sunroomssunroom

If you are planning on 2016 being the year that you add an extension to your property, you could do worse than add a sunroom. Just like a conservatory but with more structure, opt for vast windows that allow the sun and light to pour in. Keep the interior minimal with light, cool colours.

#7 Pizzazz in the cloak room

Yes, you read that right. The downstairs loo or cloakroom, so often the very poor relation in any household is the blank canvas and thus, if you fancy letting loose with amazing wallpaper and out of this world accessories, then take yourself to the smallest room in the house.

We have seen amazing designs with all black wallpaper, huge mirrors and bright colour accessories.

#8 Attention-seeking in the bedroommaster-bedroom

We all know how the bedroom should be a place of peace and tranquillity. And this has not changed but create something different by marking the space behind and above the bed with something different.

Use real, rustic wood or opt for very elaborate wallpaper and create a look that is to die for.

#9 And finally, the hallway

An organised hallway is something we all hanker after and 2016 is the year to go for it. Think postal sorting offices with a range of boxes on the wall that make putting shoes away a breeze – and never lose your gloves again…
