5 Home Renovations for Winter 2015

remodels for winter 2015

By tackling a few home renovation tasks during the winter, you can increase your property’s value and lower your utility bills. The biggest benefit is that most projects can be completed on a budget.

Redecorate the Walls

If your walls are dull, a fresh coat of paint, crown molding, and a new trim can instantly change the look of the space.

Painting on a cold day while the windows are closed is totally safe if the paint is water-based and environmentally friendly. Eco-friendly paints dry fairly quickly and do not emit any harsh fumes. Using painter’s tape and a bold paint color is highly recommended because dramatic patterns or stripes will give your walls visual flair.

Redesign the Kitchen

For about $100 dollars, you can customize your kitchen by adding a backsplash. Over 400 sizes and styles are available at most home improvement stores. If you prefer a classic design, kitchen backsplashtile or metal is a great choice.

Because the process of installing a backsplash is time-consuming, you should begin this project during the weekend. To avoid costly errors, set aside time so that you can prepare and test a design template. If this step is skipped, you will have problems installing the materials in irregular spaces.

Update the Bathroom

You can transform your regular bathroom into a spa by installing new faucets, fixtures, and tiles. Because a bathroom renovation project is ambitious, professional help will be needed. To achieve the best results, choose a BBB-Accredited business, such as Bruzzese Home Improvements.

Install New Lighting

ceiling-fanA ceiling fan that has multiple lights can lighten up your home on dark winter nights. If you choose a modern fixture, you can update the style of the space as well.

Fixtures that use LED lighting should be considered since LED bulbs use less electricity. In the family room, install dimmers because they can help you save even more energy.

Do not install any lighting fixture without professional assistance. If you hire an electrician, the best installation procedures will be implemented to prevent future electrical issues.

Replace Old Doors

When doors age, they usually develop cracks and scratches. By replacing your outdated doors, you can give a dull space an updated look at a low cost.

Although sliding doors are popular, double doors are more stylish and functional. However, if your home needs more natural light, a French-style door is a better option.

By completing any of these home renovation projects, you can impress your guests this winter.

Putting Off A Bathroom Remodel Is A Big Mistake: Six Tips To Get Started

Bathroom Remodel

If you’ve been postponing a bathroom remodel for any reason, consider that bathrooms and kitchens are the most used areas in the home and deserve an upgrade to contemporary sensibilities. Bathrooms are often neglected when it comes to home renovations, but it can increase the comfort in your home and make your home more valuable.

Advanced Methods And Materials

Take into consideration the advances in materials and techniques that have occurred over the past ten years. The most savvy renovation specialists know all the recent upgrades. For instance, durable surfaces made from crushed glass and cement make a superb sink counter top. The material is constructed from recycled bottles that would otherwise be discarded to add to the landfill, and it comes in attractive colors. New shower heads can save you water. There are many small upgrades to consider that can make a big difference.

Look Down For Inspiration

bathroom-tile flooringA floor taken for granted is a floor neglected. Look down at the existing floor. Most likely, it shows sign of heavy wear along with some stains. Tile that was fresh years ago now is cracked or even has missing chunks. A popular alternative to tile is salvage wood, because reclaimed wood that has aged well may have the tight grain which makes the flooring more dent-resistant. A thick coat of Varathane in your favorite color that has been topped with clear Varathane makes a durable, waterproof floor that will have guests admiring your innovation and the craftsmanship of your hired professionals.

Paint Is The Quickest Renovation

An old saying goes that paint is the fastest renovation, and it’s true. By selecting your choice of color in a paint, your new bathroom can shine in fresh color. Opt for brighter neutral colors in the bathroom, since dark colors can make a small space feel even more cramped.

Windows Are Not Just For Computers

Responsible renovation dictates double-pane insulated glass windows with a low E-coating. Professional decorators will declare that light enters the bathroom via a bathroom window frosted for privacy, yet heat entering is thwarted by both the special glass and a shade or shutter. The ambiance of a cool, gently lit bathroom makes for a very pleasant room.

Accommodating Commodes

Low-flush toilets are basic to any renovation. The standard 1.6 gallon flush saves water and money. Take a moment to choose the perfect style and height for your home’s residents. Elders may be accommodated by high-rise toilets that any young visitors may access via a small step stool. A plumber in Katy, TX can help with choosing the right toilet and plumbing options for your bathroom.

Mirror Magic

A new, larger wall mirror maximizes any size bathroom. It can also make the bathroom feel bigger, especially if there are no windows,or they are small.bathroom

Door Choices

The bathroom door is most likely wood, but a specialist will suggest other materials, too. Wood warps or swells due to moisture changes in the bathroom, but a metal or fiberglass door avoids this problem. Color the new door that blends with decor, and your new bathroom is ready for admiration.

Renovating a bathroom can increase the return on investment to the home, and this is welcome news to any homeowner. Start planning today for an elegant bathroom, and don’t put off a renovation any longer.

Great Additions to Up the Sale Price of Your House

When it comes to selling your house, you want to get as much out of the sales price as you can, but it isn’t always easy. In many neighborhoods, you have stiff competition, and buyers are always looking to get the most house for their money. You have to do everything you can to make your house stand out and up the sale price. One way you can do that is by making a few new additions to your home, or at least refreshing some of the existing spaces. Keep in mind that not all additions are worth the same amount, so stick with these upgrades, and you’ll eventually really see that sales price climb.

A New Kitchen
Kitchen RenovationA kitchen renovation is one of the home upgrades you’ll see the most return on. Investing anywhere from $300 to $5,000 should get you a return of anywhere from 3 to 7 percent.  If yout budget allows, consider renovating your outdated kitchen to add even more value to your home. Alternatively, focus on fixing the things that will jump out to buyers: a faucet that leaks, the burnt countertop, etc. Also, keep in mind that new or at least matching appliances are a huge incentive to buyers, so consider replacing your outdated ones or at least order new faces or fronts to make them all match.

An Extra Bathbathroom
Next to the kitchen, the bathrooms are the next priority for most buyers so another great way to raise the price on your home is to add an extra bath. If there isn’t space for a completely new bathroom, then simply focus on updating the existing spaces. Even simple fixes like caulking the tub and re-grouting the tile can make a huge difference in enticing buyers. Consider replacing the vanity and countertop, put a new coat of paint on the walls and you can really blow interested buyers away without too hefty of an investment. This fix should earn you roughly 2 to 3 percent more on your sales price.

Landscaping
landscapingCurb appeal is an important selling factor so be sure to invest some of your budget here. Well-designed landscaping can turn a tired, drab, cookie cutter home into a real knockout, which will both attract more buyers and increase your sales price. Be sure to replace old bushes and add some color. Stand-alone plants are great, but you can also make great impact with flower beds and potted plants.

Install a Security System
Safety and security are also important to buyers, so keep this in mind as you list your home. For most buyers today, a preexisting security system is a real incentive. So consider options that are comprehensive but still affordable, like the systems available from Northstar Home Security. A security system requires very little investment on your part but goes a long way toward making a new homeowner feel safe and comfortable in a new place.

New Light and Plumbing Fixtures
Dated light and plumbing fixtures is a sure way to sink the sales price of your home, so take some time and money to update these treatments. It may not seem like a huge deal to you, but outdated gold fixtures, or worse, rusted fixtures are a real deterrent to buyers. Plus, this update won’t cost you an arm and a leg to complete.

The final sales price on a home is a fine balance between striking a good deal for both the buyer and the seller. However, one of the best ways to guarantee that you get the most out of your home is to make a few additions that carry a high value for prospective buyers. Use this list to guide you as you update your home in preparation to sell, and you’ll be sure to get top dollar for your house.

Reasonable Remodels: Five Cheap Fixes for the Bathroom

bathroom remodel

A bathroom renovation is on everyone’s wish list, but not necessarily in the budget. If you’re looking to upgrade this space but can’t afford a complete overhaul, there’s no shortage of cheap fixes that will leave you with a brand new bathroom without the true expense of one.

Replacing the Vanity and Shower Door
Vanities are one of the few opportunities to furnish a bathroom with a statement piece reflecting your style. While modern designs with smooth lines are the current trend, there’s no bathroom showerreason you can’t go the antique route with a solid wood construction that’s a tribute to craftsmanship.

For the shower door, bring elegance to the room by replacing the old, dirty door with a high-end frameless model with clear glass. The clear glass and frameless design will make the space look larger and feel richer.

Changing the Fixtures
One of the easiest ways to date a room is with fixtures. If the faucet and shower handles are chrome, the bathroom probably hasn’t been updated since at least the ’90s. Brushed nickel is the most recent trend, but it’s slowly being replaced by darker finishes such as oil-rubbed bronze. In terms of style, antique designs are making a comeback as well and they’re a great way to bring attention to the small details of the space. Continuity is key in this tip. If you’re going to change one, change them all, including the light fixture and door hardware.

Re-grouting
Redoing the tiles in your bathroom can be an expensive endeavor. Instead, consider re-grouting with a different color. This works best with subway tiles. The grout color in older bathrooms were chosen to blend into the tiles rather than standout. When re-grouting, go the latter route. Instead of a muted color, choose one that accents the tiles or stands in contrast, such as a dark gray grout against white tiles. It’s a simple job that will completely change the look of your bathroom.

Laying New Flooring
Flooring is another cost-effective upgrade. While wood flooring is the premium option, a cheaper route is faux wood tiles at $2 per square foot, less than half the price of hardwood floors. If it’s a do-it-yourself project, these porcelain tiles are also much easier to install, don’t require the same degree of maintenance, and are more durable under heavy traffic.

Painting and Window Treatments
bathroomWhen all else fails, add a new coat of paint and window treatments. True for any room, changing the paint color can breathe new life into a space and is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to remodel. The majority of indoor paint sold in stores is water-based latex paint, so use a brush with synthetic bristles, and if you want to cut in along the edges of walls and around frames, use a two-inch brush with a tapered edge. The thicker the nap on a roller cover, the better the results. For this project, you’ll want one that’s 3/8 an inch in thickness. Lambswool roll covers will work best, but if you’ve installed new drywall and have smooth walls, opt for mohair or microfiber covers.

If there’s a window, upgrade the window treatments. Swap the dated vinyl blinds with real wood Las Vegas shutters from Sunburst for a rustic look. If it’s a large bathroom and the window is far enough away from the toilet, shower or sink, floor-to-ceiling panels on a decorative rod is a nice touch. For smaller spaces, go for an understated valance.

The cost of upgrade projects on this list range from $50 for a can of paint and quality tools, to no more than $1,500 for a high-end vanity and shower door. What’s more important is they’re all DIY projects with the help of a few online tutorials.

Bathroom Design Mistakes: How to Avoid Them

bathroom renovation

We all love beautifully designed bathrooms – they represent a seamless blend of functionality and aesthetics, a much-craved feature in every society. Due to the pervading preference for luxury over sheer purposefulness, the number of spacious homes with multiple lavatories is on the rise, triggering an increase in demand for appealing bathroom fixtures and accessories and creating opportunities for continuous expansion of interior design industry. Unfortunately, the room for decorative mistakes is on the up as well, and here, you can find some of the most common no-nos to keep in mind when redoing your house.

Opting for low-quality materials

When shopping for bathroom fittings and fixtures, you should definitely go after premium quality. Even on a tight budget, settling for second-rate elements may increase your toilet renovating costs in the long run – for instance, that super-affordable acrylic bathtub may soon crack or get scratched and/or chipped and you will need to repair or replace it, which translates as a fresh component investment and some unwarranted hassle.

Picking the wrong materials altogether

bathroom remodeling mistakes_how to avoid themAntique furnishings made from sensitive stone or wood look stunning no matter where you put them. Nevertheless, wooden shelves, drawers and similar susceptible pieces have no place in your bathroom unless coated with protective paint. Bathroom elements need to be crafted from durable water-resistant materials in order to withstand the shifty shower room climate with high humidity and constant temperature changes.

Installations gone haywire

An extremely important aspect in any facility, installations can make your lavatory a true hedonistic haven – or the site of a lurking catastrophe. In a recent chat with an experienced Hazlet-based plumber, it was brought to my attention that poor bathroom installation can weaken the overall functionality and structure of your home and turn user-friendly utilities such as electricity and water into a fatal combo or a ghastly electrical shock scene in the making.

Short-lived design trends

Contemporary bathroom designs are fine, but when redoing your home, it’s better to consider a classic style that won’t go out of fashion in a few years’ time. A glass sink with a LED-lit faucet and bright green wall paint may be ridiculously trendy now, but these elements will eventually lose their appeal and cede the lavatory décor throne to other, even cooler accessories. For lasting elegance, opt for natural materials, conventional shapes and neutral tones – you’ll thank me someday.

Lack of water-proof storage

Most people keep only toiletry essentials in their bathroom, but this doesn’t mean that you won’t need adequate storage space there. Minimalism doesn’t feel elegant in the least when you find yourself naked on the cold tiles with no towel rack at hand. Also, you’ll have to put your skincare and beauty products somewhere – and few people keep makeup and night creams in their kitchen or pantry; they usually store them in bathroom cabinets and shelves.

Poor ventilation for happy bacteria and mold

bathroom remodelIf you want to grow some quality bathroom mold, mildew, rust and potentially hazardous bacteria, skip bathroom ventilation projects altogether. If, however, you want your lavatory to be clean, healthy and stylish, install a window or a ceiling ventilation fixture. Adequate air flow will minimize air humidity and deter bacteria infestations, rusting of metal elements and appearance of mold stains on the walls.

A lighting slipup

A place devoted to personal hygiene, hairstyling and makeup regimens, even the classiest bathroom needs to be functional, and no amount of design coolness can make up for improper illumination. Besides, lavatories abound in moisture and slippery surfaces and it takes just a careless step in a poorly lit shower room to send you careening over the tiles risking serious injuries.

Pick your bathroom fittings and accessories carefully – though you probably don’t spend a lot of time there, the lavatory is definitely a room where you want to feel safe and relaxed, and you’ll use it daily, so every cent you invest in loo furnishings will prove money well-spent in the long run.

Things You Shouldn’t Take for Granted When Remodeling Your Bathroom

bathroom-remodeling

As with any remodeling inside the house, bathroom remodeling is a time-demanding and an exciting task. When you step into this endeavor you might think you’ve got all figured out, but here’s the thing – you haven’t. Deciding for a remodeling action and having the end results in your head is simply not enough.

People tend to overlook some complications that arise along the way, or some unsatisfying consequences of the project. Your big dreams often do not match the practical reality, so you must learn how to adapt them to it. If you don’t know where to start, don’t worry, read on to find out advice on the possible problems and best solutions.

Take a Peek under the Tiles

They don’t say “the devil is in the details” for nothing. Sometimes the smallest things can cause you a lot of headaches. Especially if you are remodeling a bathroom inside an old house, bathroom remodeling tipsyou may encounter problems such as the tiles placed on a slab of concrete. These kind of tiles are difficult to remove and the very process is expensive. So maybe you should consider keeping your vintage tiles and invest that money elsewhere.

Visible Plumbing or Not?

First thing you should consider when opting for hiding or revealing the plumbing is the practicality. Think about the fixtures and the things connected to them when making this decision. The next step is taking care of the aesthetics. If you are aiming for a vintage or industrial look, leaving the plumbing visible would match that look perfectly. For a more modern look, hiding them would be a better option.

Think about the Threshold

When remodeling a bathroom adapting the thresholds is important, especially if someone in your house is injured or using a wheelchair. Curbless showers sound like the best option, but have in mind that the floor has to be sufficiently high for the water to flow into the drain. In a recent chat with reputed Sydney-based suppliers of bath tubs, I discovered that simpler solution is installing a walk-in bathtub with a low step in threshold.

Privacy Matters

If you are living in a family house, you know how long the lines can be in front of the bathroom in the morning. To shorten the waiting list, without compromising your privacy, think about separate bathroom rooms. They are not so hard to install as it may seem at first glance, and yet the benefits are beyond great. Your master bathroom will finally be equipped to accommodate two people who use it at the same time, which will free you from a lot of headaches in the future.

Warm up

The bathroom is one of those rooms where we simply can’t handle the cold. It’s not that you can wrap around in a blanket when you start feeling the chilliness. What you have left to do is to install a heated floor. If you make that choice, consider the possible problems with the transition area (the door threshold) and discuss this matter with a professional. Have in mind that installing the heating system means you have to tear out the existing floor and especially if we talk about old houses which require extensive works.

Water, Water Everywhere

bathroomYou don’t want to have to deal with water on the bathroom floor every day and if you opt for a stand-alone shower, you just might. Having to sweep a water paddle door after every single shower can be a pretty annoying task, though it seems it can take just a minute, on a daily basis, it’s one minute too much. Stalls that open on the corner leave you with bare floor on the one side and a bath mat on the other, so there are no winners in this situation. Opting for a bathtub or some other type of shower is a better option.

As you can see, there are a lot of considerations to make before you even start thinking about bathroom accessories, color of the wall and vanity. But if you keep in mind the most important details we mentioned, you’ll have your perfect bathroom soon enough.

5 Tips for Decorating Your Walls With Tile

ceramic tileIf you’re tired of the same old boring paint and flat walls, there is a solution that adds dimension and a modern flare to your walls – wall tiles. Tile can be anything from stone to 3-D wallpaper tiles, or even tiles made into beautiful murals.

According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association, most tiles are some type of clay or a clay mixture and are classified as porcelain or non-porcelain – red or white clay fired in a kiln. What you need to know for your decorating needs is that porcelain tiles have better water resistance and hold up longer to wear and tear or heavy traffic. Non-porcelain ceramic tiles are less expensive but better suited for lower traffic, such as walls or out-of-the-way places.

1. Choose Your Material

Your first step is to choose which tiles will appear in which part of your home. For example, a glass tile may look perfect in your bathroom but not look quite right in a master bedroom. If you’re unsure which tiles to add where, ask to take home a few samples of each and set them up against the wall. This will show you how they blend with the other décor and also give you an idea of how well the tile colors go with the overall color scheme and look of your home.

2. Decide on a Color Palette

Tiles come in every color you could possibly imagine. You may want to think of about three to five colors you’d like to use throughout your house to tie everything together. You can also shower tileschoose a general color palette before you ever go shopping for tiles to make sure color combinations work well together and have enough contrast.

3. Paint Existing Tiles

If you have tile in your home but it is outdated or a horrendous color, take heart. You can paint tiles for a more uniform look or just to update the overall theme. Most painters use either latex or epoxy paint to freshen up old tile. Use a combination of colors to create a textured look, paint the tile wall a solid color or paint a mural on the tiles. You can even leave plain tiles alone but add a detail such as a floral accent or geometric pattern.

4. Create a 3-D Pattern

Another option for wall tiles are 3D patterns. Typically, these tiles come in sections, but when placed side by side you can create forms such as waves, circles or flowers. You can combine different types of tiles to create a wall story or simply stick with one design and paint it a simple white. You can make this an accent wall with touches of color or create the pattern in an entire room.

5. Don’t Be Afraid of Unique Materials

tilesDon’t be afraid to try unique ideas, especially for accent. For example, create a beautiful mural backsplash from tiny glass tiles of the French countryside. Take copper or stainless steel ceiling tiles and use them behind your sink for a sleek, modern, industrial look. Use huge marble floor tiles for the walls in your bathroom for a Grecian design.

When it comes to adding interest to your home by placing tiles on the walls, take the time to lay a few pieces against the wall, hold them up and make sure it is a look you’ll love for years to come. There is only one thing that is more challenging than choosing the tile you want for your home: That’s trying to take it back out if you decide you don’t like it. With just a little planning, you’ll find something you love and the time and effort will be worth it. You’ll be thrilled that the tile is there to stay.

How To Transform Your Home Into Your Sanctuary of Rest and Relaxation

transform your home

With all of the stress that surrounds us, one place we shouldn’t have to deal with added stress is in our own homes. The problem, however, is that too few of us take the time to make our homes the center for relaxation, our safe haven or sanctuary if you will. If you’re willing to put in a little time and effort, though, you can easily transform your home into a relaxing, stress-free place just for you, and all you need is a little paint, the right lighting, and a few other unique upgrades.

Get Rid of the Clutter

Over-stuffing is one of the biggest distractors from relaxation. Piles of books and clothes or items in general disarray is one of the biggest stress-inducers in any home. So, as you begin your home transformation, the first place you should start is getting rid of some of the clutter. Go through your things and sort what you want to keep and what can be donated or even sold. Be mindful that your goal is to create a relaxing space, and it’ll be easier to get rid of a few things here and there.

Change the Paint

Painting is one of the single most effective ways to change the feel of a room without making too big of an investment. If your room is bathed in a loud print or a bright color, it is obviously not going to be soothing or relaxing. Opt for colors that are soft and airy instead. Shades of blue and green are especially good for bedrooms while neutral earth tones are great for rooms throughout your living space. Whatever color you choose, just remember to keep the combined color scheme simple, calming, and comforting.

Select the Right Furniture

interior-designAs you transform your home, you’ll want to consider comfortable relaxing furniture as well. For everyday pieces, focus on choosing furniture that is functional and comfortable. Remember to choose pieces that work together, too, instead of combat one another in form or design. If you want to really up the relaxation factor in your home, look for a massage chair that you can home to each evening. Having unique pieces that exude relaxation and comfort is one of the best ways to make your space relaxing and renewing.

Check Your Lighting

Lighting is another component that can really add to or take away from the ambiance of your home. To increase the relaxation-factor of your home, focus on lighting locations, not the whole rooms. Bright overhead lighting is often too aggressive, especially in the evening when you are trying to calm down and soothe your senses. Lamps and other single lighting features are great for adding soothing lighting to an area. To soften the light of larger overhead options, add a dimmer to the lighting fixture so you can adjust the brightness to fit your mood. Also, select full-spectrum bulbs that are made to mimic natural light, instead of standard bulbs that are too bright. These lighting options will help create a more soothing, natural atmosphere in your home.

Create Your Own Personal Spa

Don’t have time to make it to the local spa? Don’t worry. You can have a spa in your very own bathroom. This change is a slightly more costly renovation, but it is well worth the spa bathroominvestment. Consider installing a jetted tub where you can sit and relax at the end of the day. Heated floors are a nice touch for coming home and relaxing or even just staying warm on an especially chilly day. And, there are few things more relaxing than a shower after a long stressful day. Finish your bathroom off with fine touches like granite countertops and tile flooring and you’ll have a space that rivals even the most upscale spas.

Your home should be your sanctuary, and with a few simple upgrades, it can be. Transform your home into your haven of relaxation and look forward to living right where you are every single day.

Out of the world bathroom design ideas

Futuristic bathroom

If you are a keen admirer of futuristic designs, there is a possibility for a bathroom makeover according to your passions. Of course, all the hi-tech multimedia innovations are commonly used and applied in our living rooms, kitchens and study rooms. However, we are here to talk about bathrooms and I am here to give you an insight into the world of futuristic bathroom designs and as a living proof that it is functionally implementable.

Bathtub or shower cabin

This dilemma is not crucial to your futuristic design; any option that you choose offers plenty of innovative solutions. When bathtubs are concerned, they are highly customizable when it comes to shape and size. For example, a diamond shaped one will certainly make an appearance and easily become a center piece of your bathroom. Enriched with digitally controllable water level and temperature it will be at your service and ready for you whenever you programmed it to be. There are also models available that use their interactive surface to virtually color the water to your preference. Why not take a bath in azure blue of the Caribbean? On the other hand, shower cabins are even more customizable. Touch screen water flow and temperature control easily turns them into massage cabins and water therapy ones. Also, their designs are so customizable that you can practically fit them at any spot and angle, with foldable cabins and retractable taps.

LED bathtubs

Sink

Another item that can practically have any shape, color and place you want. Those that react to motions and shadows have been used for a long time now and they are upgraded by voice commands and temperature programmability. Also, the shapes and sizes of taps are practically limitless and can be adapted to any height preference. On top of that, a proper choice would significantly contribute to design in general. For example, dorf tapware with flowing curves and smooth bendswould fit nicely in practically any bathroom and give it a touch of class, besides futuristic appearance.

Tapware with curves and smooth blends

Light

Light fixtures are great atmosphere builders. Dimmable central fixtures of infinite shapes available, a color change feature, and various remote controllable desk and wall ones will enable you to build the atmosphere according to your current mood. This is a great feature, if you hate being blinded in the morning, just as I do, you will certainly cherish this.

Tiles

What is futuristic about tiles, you may ask. Well, the choice of material and shapes, to put it short. There are tiles available that clean themselves, and there are those that offer a 3D effect similar to that achieved in the best cinemas. So, you can make your bathroom appear twice as big and have it dried out by itself not more than 5 minutes after you finished your shower.

Futuristic comes with customizability and this is a great combination that anyone can make use of. The only possible problem is that you will spend even more time in you bathrooms. Luckily, out of pleasure, not need.
