This results in a complete meltdown for the individual and, since it is the early hours of the morning, finding a plumber difficulties a difficult affair. The problem of emergency plumbing is not something that tends to bother a lot of people, be it residential or even a commercial business which has a lot of emphasis on plumbing. Any type of emergency can arise any time and this is when a plumber is required. A proper professional can now be availed at any time of the day and night with the emergency plumbing services.

emergency plumbing services

Service at any Time

There are now many agencies that provide emergency plumbing services for commercial businesses and residences at odd hours in different cities. These services are a life saver for the emergency situations such as clogged piping to even faulty valves, the professionals are luckily at hand to address the problem and help in fixing it permanently.

Making a right Decision

Although, there are a lot of services available, there are also agencies out there that often tend to overcharge and such companies have the exuberantly high costs that they charge the customers to arrive at an odd time or emergency situation. To avoid being overcharged, it is best to check with the local agencies providing the service and choose the one with the best quote.

Checking Their Services

In terms of the services that are provided, the list is comprehensive and includes every possible specialist based on what the customer chooses while he/she is calling for an emergency service. The customer will be given a rough quote when they select the required service and can be observed as follows:-

  • Drain specialists
  • Checking, fixing of underground water, sewage and gas lines
  • Garbage disposal from piping
  • Observation of piping through video cameras
  • Trenching services
  • Backhoe services
  • Fixing of backflows

Services like the ones mentioned earlier are something that happens in an emergency situation and these are difficult for customers to handle on their own and compulsorily requires the need of emergency plumbing services. The customer needs to be aware of the different services in the area and keep a track on the agency they wish to call for any kind of emergency situations if they arise.

  • The best way is to go through customer feedback on various consumer report sites which help the customers in finding out what their experience was with a particular company and this helps them in better understanding the quality of the services being offered as well as the company’s pricing policy and the way they treat their customers.
  • This helps in discovering any forms of hidden costs which some companies tend to charge in order to inflate the bill even further and can be extremely inconvenient to the customer and having a good feedback with a detailed list of pricing can do wonders for the company and help it in attracting more customers as well.
  • When it comes to the corporate based services and even jetting services, the emergency plumbing services are one of the most critical services that are in need. Businesses that often rely on a lot of plumbing can face troubles at odd times which can range from simple backflows to even problems with their gas lines which need fixing.

An emergency plumber in this situation can help them in easily identifying the problem and fix it before any damage is done.

HOW TO GET RID OF THE INVISIBLE TOXINS IN YOUR HOME?

Did you know that air in your home can be 5 times more polluted than the air outside? Perhaps, this sounds unbelievable, but our important tips will make you avoid all the risks that may impair your health, and you will instantly breathe easier!

pollution

Although you try to keep your home clean and safe on regular basis, there is a big threat to your well-being that isn’t visible to the naked eye. Pollution in your home can sometimes be 2-5 times higher than outdoors since the air in the house can be saturated with pollen, mold, pet dander, and pollutants from household cleaning products. During winter, the situation doesn’t get any better – weatherproofing combined with heated, dry air can boost indoor pollution levels even higher with airborne toxins, lowering levels of humidity. The combination of the two can cause severe allergies, asthma, respiratory difficulties and even heart attacks.

Since we spend 60% of our time in our homes, it’s time to clear the air and breathe freely!

  1. Crack the window

Every time you think of the opened window when it’s cold outside, it makes your skin crawl! But you should know that sealing a house too tightly doesn’t allow the entry of fresh oxygen or the escape of carbon dioxide that you inhale. As a result, your body doesn’t get the amount of oxygen it needs and it’s no wonder if you feel constantly tired or lethargic.

Since oxygen levels can be especially low in a sealed bedroom after a night sleep, make sure that your bedroom windows be opened in the morning (at least 5-10 minutes), and again before you go to bed at night. This time will be enough to let the sufficient amount of oxygen in and carbon dioxide out and not to chill the rest of the house.

  1. Turn off ventilation fans

Running powerful fans for an extended period of time can redirect exhaust gasses that may include carbon monoxide fumes back into the house, instead of up and out of flue.

Turn exhaust fans off when they’ve done their job or consider setting a manual switch with a timer to limit unnecessary use.

  1. Change filters

Mold from damp basements and lingering spores in air-conditioning systems can become airborne, if the windows are closed. Mold can irritate your eyes, cause allergies and respiratory problems.

Replace filthy heating system filters regularly, recommend air quality experts from Ottawa, since filters lock pollutants that feed mold (human skin cells, pollen, pet dander…). Have your heating system checked annually, and if there are any problems, fix them before you need the heat.

  1. Clean the basement / attic

All different stuff that you stack in the basement stirs up dust triggering allergy symptoms such as: sensitive eyes, wheezing or congestion.

Take the boxes outside to wipe the dust off them. Wash all the blankets, linen or clothes before you use them. It would be a good thing to put on a respiratory mask before you enter the attic or basement to protect yourself from airborne particles that cause irritations and allergies.

  1. Forget about romantic candles

Scented candles that many people enjoy give off more than fragrance – studies show that they can inflame respiratory tract and aggravate asthma, especially if you don’t do the regular dusting. Dust simply loves to ride on particulates that candles give off and enter deep into the lungs to obstruct breathing.

Candles in large jars really look stunning, but it’s time to say good bye to them, since they tend to send even more particulates into the air than the regular ones. If you can’t imagine your home without the soft, candle light glow, choose unscented, taper candles and place them far from vents and other air sources.

Stopping the Invasion: 4 Ways to Remove Pests from Your Home

Stopping the Invasion: 4 Ways to Remove Pests from Your Home

Paranoia. We all get it after a home invasion. You may start seeing quick blurs of gray in your peripheral vision, hearing what could have been a scratch or a squeak. Pests are certainly a nuisance, but they can also be dangerous. Rat droppings and various pest excretions can make your family sick. And summer time is the time you need to be on the lookout. According to a company offering pest control in Jenks, Oklahoma, the increased moisture and warm temperatures are perfect breeding conditions for the least desirable creepy-crawlies. To keep your home safe and worry free, not to mention cleaner, consider these four ways to reclaim your habitat.

1) Traps

If you are battling mice or rats, various traps can be your first line of defense. You’ll probably want to start with the typical, old-school, metal mousetrap. Just bait the trap and place it in common traffic areas for the critters. If you can’t handle sadistically waiting for the rat to come across your instant doom trap, there are more humane sticky traps that capture the animal alive. Once immobilized, you can then transfer it to a land far, far away.

2) Baits

If you’re battling smaller, less furry creatures like roaches and ants, baits are a great option. Place them in dark corners and along walls where insects like to hide. The poison not only kills the bugs, but draws them in. This helps get rid of the ones you don’t see. For ants, place the bait near their trail. The ants will carry the bait home to their queen which kills the whole colony.

3) Sprays and Bombs

You may find yourself desperately battling fleas or lice, especially if you have pets in your home. The best way to deal with these tiny, vicious beasts is by spraying your home with poisons like Raid. These sprays should be safe for pets and kids once they dry and can work up to six weeks. Check the bottle for safety information.

You’ll also want to fumigate your home with “bug bombs” if you have the chance. Make sure everyone has somewhere to go for a few hours. Remove your pets from your home. Follow all safety instructions. When you come home, you’ll want to wash dishes, bedding, and any surfaces that were exposed.

4) Combine Efforts

Combining multiple methods is your most effective option, especially in insect infestations. Spray around your walls, doorways, and windows where pests enter your home and put out baits. Though sprays can last for weeks or more, it’s okay to spray as needed to keep your home pest free.

When you’ve exhausted all inexpensive efforts, it’s time to call an exterminator. Your health and peace of mind is worth it!

Learn Four Basic Steps of Installing a Garage Door Opener

Installing your garage door opener is not an easy feat. However, it isn’t impossible. If you are already handy with tools and with little do-it-yourself projects at home, then you might find installing your own garage door opener a fun experiment. If you haven’t tried putting up your own opener, you might want to ask for a little help from anyone at home.

Here are the four steps that you have to follow in order to install your new garage door opener:

garage door opener

1. Check the garage door. Before you start assembling and installing the garage door opener, inspect the garage door and its parts. Ensure that all the parts are working and that there is proper door balance. Check if there are any rusting or broken parts and if there are any wobbly pieces that may need to be fixed before installing a new opener. Test if the door also closes and opens as it should. You may need to have your garage door repaired before you install an opener. This makes sure that you won’t encounter any problem after the opener is already installed. After, you need to prepare it for installation. Lubricate the parts and remove cords that are in the way.

2. Lay out all the parts and start putting everything together. Once you have checked the garage door, it is time to lay out all the parts that came in your opener kit. Check if all the parts on the list are included in the package. Set up motor on a ladder for a quicker installation while you put together the main assembly. Ensure that the ladder aligns the motor to the center of the garage door. Put together the rail and attach them as directed. Slide in the carriage over the rail and attach it to the motor. Then, install the pulley at the end of the rail opposite to the motor. Feed either the belt or chain through the end of the rail, around the pulley, and around the other end of the motor. Finally, attach the belt or chain to the carriage with the screw.

3. Install blocking on the ceiling and locate point of connection on garage door. If you don’t have blocking on your ceiling, you may need to install one. This allows you to attach the motor to the ceiling. The kit already comes with specific instructions on the blocking that the opener needs. Ensure that you are attaching the blocking to the joists in your ceiling. The specific distance from the top of the garage door to the opener motor will be specified by the instructions in the kit. This is why putting up your motor in the first place will make the process easier. Then, attach the bracket and insert the end of the main assembly to the top of the garage door as per the instructions. Lift the motor and mount it on the ceiling with durable straps or angle iron. Lastly, attach the bracket to the garage door.

4. Install the additional features. Before you finish up your installation, install the rest of the features that your garage door opener has. This includes the emergency release rope, light bulbs on the main compartment, the electric safety eyes, and the keypad wall control. Make sure that the emergency release cord is adjusted accordingly so kids cannot reach it. Light bulbs should be suitable for rough use since the opener vibrates with every use. Check with your manual for the most suitable bulb. With the safety eyes, you may need to run down wires to the bottom sides of the garage door and to the eyes. Ensure that you’re following the instructions for the wiring.

Home Repair Guide – Where to Start and Where to End

Home Repair Guide

Any homeowner knows that repairing and maintaining your home is a job that will never be completely done. However, in the real world the time you have to devote to home repair may be very limited. If you have to decide which repairs to tackle and which to postpone over the course of a period of time such as a vacation or visit, here are some tips on how to prioritize your project list.

Start at the Top

A sound roof allows your home to protect and shield its inhabitants. Climb up and take a good look. Seal around flashing and chimneys as needed, replace any loose or damaged shingles, and check for soft spots. While you are up there, clean out the gutters and reattach or replace any loose or damaged sections.

Plug the Leaks

Few things can do more damage more quickly than water. Carefully check for damp spots or old water stains on ceilings, walls, floors, and around windows and doors. If water infiltration is coming from the outside, find the source and replace, patch, or seal as necessary to stop the leak. Equally critical are interior leaks. Few things are more important to a home’s longevity and comfort than a reliable plumbing system. If the water is coming from a plumbing leak, try to find the source. Some companies, like, Bishop Plumbing, Heating and Cooling, know that a slow leak can quickly become a major problem. Bad faucets and constantly running toilets may be safe for do-it-yourselfers, but most other jobs require extra help.

Head for the Basement

If you dread going into your basement, it probably needs some attention. Check for standing water or evidence of past floods. Walls should be made watertight through the application of sealant and the repair of cracks. If you have large cracks or exterior walls that lean, you will likely need a professional. While you are in the basement, do routine annual maintenance on your appliances.

Look for Weak Spots

Next, take a perimeter walk and look for soft or rotted areas. Pay special attention to areas around windows and doors. Repaint and replace caulk as needed. Replace any damaged wood. Inside, check exposed floor joists and beams for damage and look for soft spots in floors. Pay special attention to areas around sinks, tubs, and appliances. Replace weak areas in your subfloor and replace the flooring or piece in new flooring to match the old.

If you’ve done a good job, when your next vacation rolls around you should be able to concentrate on repairs that are more aesthetic. In the meantime, though, your home should be safe, dry, and comfortable thanks to your hard work.

Amateur at Home: What You Can Do about a Stinky Sink

kitchen sink

Whether you have soft water or hard water, garbage disposal or traditional sink, chances are you will have to deal with sink odors at some time or another. Sink odors most commonly happen when food particles build up in the drain and decompose. It’s a natural process, but the smell is not something you want infiltrating your kitchen. A stinky sink is also a sign you might have blockage or further plumbing problems so it’s good to keep a sharp eye out and stop problems when you see them.

Home Remedies
There are actually several around-the-house, non-chemical products that can be helpful in destroying odors in your sink. Despite what you may have heard, they can actually be extremely effective in most cases and will save you money. If you have a garbage disposal, try cutting a lemon in half and putting it in the disposal. Not only will it get rid of the odor, but it will leave a fresh and natural lemon scent whenever you use it. For sinks with or without a garbage disposal, you can try a combination of 1 cup baking soda, 2 cups vinegar, and boiling hot water. First, pour the cup of baking soda into the drain. Next, pour the vinegar on top (this will cause bubbling). Flush it with hot water. This will kill the bacteria that builds up from decomposing food. The benefits of using these products are that these items are all pretty cheap, versatile, and you might already have them at home.

Store-Bought Products
A little hot water, lemon, baking soda, and vinegar go a long way in destroying sink odors. However, if these do not work, there are several products you can buy at the store that are made to take care of drain clogs and/or odors. Since these products can contain potentially harmful chemicals, it’s recommended to only use them as a last resort.

Call a Plumber
If none of the above methods seem to help and/or you don’t want to use store-bought products, you can always call plumber. Sometimes the decomposing food gets so stuck in the drain, and the only way to get it out is to disassemble the drain. In this case, it’s best to call someone who knows what they are doing. Places like Rooter Pro Plumbing can do emergency repairs and help get your kitchen back in working order more quickly.

There are many solutions to sink odors. If the first methods you try don’t work, don’t get discouraged. Sink odors may be inconvenient and gross, but they can always be remedied.

From Hut to House: A 5-Step Guide to Home Renovation

home renovation

Without a doubt, home renovation is an exciting and potentially enjoyable experience whether your abode is 20 years old or a hundred. The big problem is that the typical homeowner often doesn’t know where to focus their energy to achieve the best outcomes. If you’re embarking down the renovation path, you can’t go wrong with these surefire remodeling ideas.

Repair & Revamp the Pipes

Even seemingly minor plumbing problems can result in major fiascoes down the road. Have a qualified plumber assess the health of your home’s plumbing and recommend long-term fixes to any problems that are found. While you’re at it, you might want to install a tank-less heating setup or a recirculating water pump.

Have Your HVAC Modernized

At a minimum, any home renovation should include a thorough overhaul of the existing HVAC infrastructure. Professionals, like those at HELP Plumbing, Heating, Cooling and Electric, know that even if your HVAC engine is up to snuff, a little restorative maintenance and duct cleaning is highly recommended. If you have an older house, switching from an inefficient boiler to a natural gas furnace is worth consideration.

Give the Floors a Refresh

Few interior improvements turn a house into a home as fast as a floor makeover. The most popular flooring renovation is switching to hardwood. Even DIY amateurs can slap down some oak or maple in place of vinyl and achieve a stellar look. Likewise, installing tile doesn’t take much effort and delivers unbelievable ROI.

Improve Thermal Efficiency

From Arizona to the frozen north of Maine, it’s important to create a nearly impermeable barrier between the inside and the outside. Putting better insulation into exterior walls and underneath rafters in the attic is a good way to start. Installing highly efficient double-paned windows will seriously cut down on HVAC-related energy bills immediately.

Upgrade Roofing & Siding

Making your home’s outer skin be all that it can be is both aesthetically pleasing and practical. If you have an asphalt shingle roof, it might make sense to consider a durable metal roof instead. Rather than PVC siding, you might want to switch to stained red cedar for a classier look and better pest repulsion.

Most home improvement neophytes succumb to what’s known as “option paralysis” when planning out their renovations. Obviously, you’ll have to make some hard choices when it comes to what you should work on and how much you should spend. Regardless of the circumstances, these renovations will work with any remodeling scheme.

Regular Home Maintenance – Roll Up Your Sleeves!

regular home maintenance

Homes are the single biggest investment that most people make. According to a recent study, the average homeowner remains in a home for 13 years before selling it. A lot of life happens in 13 years. Families expand, children grow, parents age, and needs and tastes change. Time marches on and takes its toll on the materials that homes are built with. After so many seasons, maybe that deck you took such pride in building ten years ago is showing signs of decay. Maybe you’ve fallen out of love with the bathroom fixtures that you received so many compliments on five years ago when they were all the rage.

There are as many DIY home improvement projects as there are motivations for people who undertake them. Some people prioritize adding financial value to their homes as an investment in their futures. For others, maximizing the utility and enjoyment of their homes for themselves and their families in the present is the highest priority. The good news is that there are some home improvement projects that allow homeowners to do both.

In today’s economy, the potential rate of return on an investment in home improvement is an important consideration when deciding how best to invest in your home. Fortunately, ten of the latest trends in home improvement and repair provide a very reasonable rate of return. For those who are willing to invest their own labor and the time it takes to learn to do the job properly, that return is even higher.

Two of the top five, which also included kitchen and bathroom remodels, were door replacements. Replacing entryway doors and garage doors are among the best investments a homeowner can make in terms of return on investment. Statistics show in 2013, homeowners were able to recoup 73% of the cost of replacing doors. In 2014, that percentage rose to 97% and in 2015, to 102%, a small profit.

Besides adding to curb appeal, replacing doors also improves safety and security. Best of all, unlike a full room remodel, it’s possible to do it yourself and save money. If you can’t afford to replace your garage door yet, regular maintenance can help preserve its safety and functionality. Cleaning and oiling the tracks helps repel moisture and prevent rusting.

Replacing an entryway door is probably one of the simplest and least expensive home improvement projects for do-it-yourselfers. One of the reasons it’s so simple is that the majority of doors are pre-hung, which means that they’ve already been framed. Many have also been pre-drilled for the doorknob and deadbolt. There are a wide variety of styles and materials to choose from. In addition to wood, other popular options include fiberglass and steel.

There are pros and cons to each type of material. Fiberglass resists wear and can be stained or painted, but doesn’t withstand high impact very well. Steel doors offer security and energy efficiency, but are subject to dents, and if dented, rust. While wood is the most expensive option, it wears well and scratches can be easily repaired.

If you’re like most homeowners, you’ve accumulated a number of tools over the years. To replace an entryway door, you’ll need the following tools:

  • Hammer
  • Tape measure
  • Caulk gun
  • Cordless drill/screwdriver and drill bits
  • Four-foot level
  • Pry bar
  • Putty knife
  • Reciprocating saw

For protection, you’ll also need earplugs, safety glasses and gloves. If you’re a new homeowner and still haven’t bought your first hammer, home improvement projects are a great way to meet your new neighbors. Good tools can be expensive, and because many people don’t want to purchase them for a single job, and then have to make space to store them for years until they are needed again, many cities have established tool lending libraries. There are also sharing communities in which people share everything from cars to casseroles, including tools. Once you have the right tools, there are a number of online sites that provide step-by-step instructions.

Those who enjoy DIY projects know that each project is another opportunity to learn a valuable new skill. While the goal may be to increase the price of your home, the sense of accomplishment after completing a DIY project is priceless.

4 Home Improvement Projects to Do This Spring

4 Home Improvement Projects to Do This Spring

Spring is the perfect time to perform any home improvement projects you have been planning. The cold weather and snow of the winter can be very damaging to your home, and the summer heat can be too unbearable to complete any project in a timely manner. The beautiful spring weather creates ideal working conditions, so make sure to finish these four home improvement projects before summer gets here.

Replace Shingles on Roof

Winter is extremely tough on your roof, especially if you get a lot of snow or ice. The hot summer sun can also do a lot of damage to shingles, so spring is the perfect time to get them replaced. If any shingle is cracked, loose, or missing any pieces, it needs to be replaced to maintain the integrity of your roof for the next year. If you do not replace your shingles in a timely manner, then you will have a leaky roof during the next heavy rainstorm.

Check Plumbing for Leaks

The freezing temperatures of winter are notorious for damaging plumbing pipes, which can cause leaking water throughout the house. Getting your pipes checked this spring is the only way to ensure that you do not get any water damage caused by leaky pipes. If the pipes are leaking, then they will need to be completely replaced by a local plumber. If you’re not sure what to think about your piping, contact a professional at a company like Clean Plumbers by Phillip Maurici Plumbing Inc.

Upgrade the Gutters

Gutters are designed to drain water and melted snow away from the foundation of your house. Old, clogged or leaky gutters are unable to successfully drain all of this water away from the house, which can potentially cause ruts to form around the house. If this happens, water will start to leak into the basement or lower level every time it rains. Replacing the gutters is an extremely easy and cheap home improvement, so you have no excuse to avoid it this spring.

Paint the Walls

Paint starts to fade and look outdated after a year or two. Spring provides the perfect weather conditions to paint the interior of your house. You can open up all of the windows for a few days to eliminate any paint fumes without being too hot or cold.

Putting off vital home improvement projects will only lead to more problems in the future. If you take on these four projects this spring, then you will have a great looking and safe home that is ready to make it through the rough temperatures of the summer and winter seasons.

Healthy Ways to Use Air Conditioning at Home

air conditioning unit

Modern homes are more often than not equipped with air-conditioners. As manufacturers of these devices keep coming up with cutting-edge tech solutions, today an average air-conditioner can replace several other devices. For instance, if you get an air conditioner inverter, you do not need a special heater or radiators, but the AC is a two-in-one device. However, no matter what air conditioning device you have and use, it is essential to follow some health-related guidelines to keep your home and your air conditioner in a proper condition.

Indoor air quality and air conditioners

The largest number of air-conditioners uses the indoor air for recirculation. By doing so, they increase energy efficiency and reduce electricity consumption. However, this procedure can make the air inside the conditioned room stale, which harms your respiratory system.

Moreover, if your windows and window frames leak the air inside your home, the efficiency of the AC device will be reduced. Because of that, if you want to keep the air inside the AC-equipped room fresh, let some air from the outside into the room a few times a day. Also, do the necessary weatherstripping works, to increase the productivity of the air-conditioner and reduce your electricity bills.

Prevent dust and debris

With more and more people suffering from all kinds of allergies, today people have to pay special attention to germs, pollen and dust in their homes. What these three allergens have in common in an average home are dirty air ducts. If you have not cleaned them for a while, there is a high probability that several layers of gunk have piled up on those vessels of your home ventilation. This can be especially serious and dangerous if you have kids. Therefore, it is important to clean the air ducts on a regular basis, especially if your house or building has been redecorated recently. It is highly likely that some of that debris and dust ended up in the air ducts and got right into your home. To avoid any hygiene and health problems, deal with that area as soon as possible.

Remove the filter dirt

Although specifications of different manufacturers can differ, the rule of thumb is to have the air filters cleaned at least once per cooling/heating season. The crucial thing when it comes to residential air conditioning devices is to maintain them in accordance with their manufacturer’s manuals.

Also, most manufacturers contact their customers during the warranty period to remind them that they should have the AC filters cleaned or replaced. However, this cleaning has to be performed regularly even after the warranty period expires. It is not a complex procedure and every home owner can learn how to do it. In addition, if you live in an extremely humid or hot area and you keep the air conditioner on all day long, the filter should be replaced every 45 days.

AC interior inspection

air conditionerReplacing or cleaning the filter is only one aspect of air conditioner maintenance. Home owners should also pay attention to the inside of their air conditioner(s). As this device works and cools a particular area, there are also some by-products of this process, the most important being condensation. The more condensation there is, the more mildew and mold is formed on the fan and other parts of the air-conditioner. If the inside area of the AC-unit is left unmaintained before winter, the pileups of mold and mildew grow significantly, providing a fertile ground for all sorts of germs. Therefore, clean the inside of the air conditioner at the end of the summer season or any other period in which you use this device and ensure a high level of hygiene.

If you use your air conditioner in accordance with the described health standards, you will ensure that every member of your household stays safe from any AC-induced diseases. Finally, a regularly maintained AC-device will last longer and waste less electricity. Therefore, take good care of your air conditioner to remain healthy and save some money along the way.
