5 Tips When Picking Wood Flooring

wood floors

Sorry, folks, the carpet versus wood flooring was only the beginning of your decision-making process, not the end of it. Although settling that debate provides a clear direction for moving forward, there are still many questions to answer before you purchase.

Need a few tips on how to pick the wood floor of your dreams? Keep these five factors in mind as you weigh your options.

1. Location

If you’re picking out wood flooring, chances are you already have a room in mind. However, you may not realize the room in question will play a big role in determining your flooring.

Solid wood has many perks. It’s a classic and beautiful upgrade, hypoallergenic and capable of lasting for decades. Unfortunately, it doesn’t pair well with water. That means if you’re renovating a bathroom or basement, solid wood is not a good choice. The moisture found in underground rooms and water closets can damage or warp solid hardwood floors.

If you want the look of hardwood in a high-moisture space, your best bet is engineered wood. A top veneer provides you with the aesthetic you desire, but the plywood core makes it more durable in moist environments. (Durable, but not impervious, so you still want to wipe up spills as soon as possible.)

Engineered wood can also be laid over radiant floor heating and concrete subfloors, whereas solid wood works best over a plywood subfloor.

2. Installation

wood flooringDo you plan to hire out your installation or DIY? Many factors — time, money, experience — will determine which route you will take, but it’s important to have a rough idea of where your skill set and the materials meet.

Engineered hardwood offers easy-to-install options like a tongue-and-groove option. Simply match the tongue to the groove and snap the planks in place. Of course, this still takes some skill with a saw and the patience to do it right. The upside is that you can float this flooring over existing material — tile, plywood, concrete — which makes for far less prep work.

Solid wood needs a plywood subfloor, which may mean more work if you have particle board or damaged subfloor. Preparing the subfloor for hardwood will either mean more money to the pros or more DIY hours for the homeowner.

3. Cost

Cost is often the biggest determining factor in any renovation. As you can see from above, it’s important to factor installation into your budget. Just don’t make the mistake of assuming engineered wood will automatically be cheaper.

Many oak options are close in price to engineered wood. And although the plywood core cuts costs, an exotic veneer choice can drive up the price of engineered wood.

Don’t forget to factor in longevity. Solid wood has a proven track record, when properly maintained. It can withstand numerous sandings and refinishings, while engineered wood’s thin veneer means your repair attempts are limited.

4. Style

Between engineered and solid options, there is a wood floor to match every style from rustic to modern, historically accurate to eclectic, farmhouse to shabby chic.wood flooring design

Several factors contribute to a wood’s style. You’ll want to consider board width; thin strips can make a space seem larger, whereas wide planks can evoke a cozy, rustic feel. Color can come from natural variations in species or from a bevy of stain options available at your local hardware store. Finally, you can select finishes that range between the rough and weathered finish of reclaimed wood or the polished lacquer of engineered planks.

5. Lifestyle

Do you have pets? Children? Is it a high-traffic area? Are you clumsy? Before selecting your flooring, it’s good to give some consideration to your lifestyle.

Solid wood is rated on a Janka scale. Essentially, a BB is driven into the wood and the rating reflects the wood’s hardness and durability. While you likely want to avoid the softest woods, like the poorly performing Douglas Fir, you don’t necessarily want to jump straight to the hardest options. Not only are they more difficult to work with, they also tend to be the most expensive.

Again, it’s important to remember solid wood can be sanded and refinished multiple times. A great middle-of-the-scale option like red oak offers decent durability for an equally decent price, and any damage (aside from flood or fire) can easily be sanded away.

If your options still feel too overwhelming, get an expert involved. They can help answer any of your lingering questions about design, durability, cost or installation.

Pimp Your Crib With These 5 Home Improvements

real-estate

The housing market is slowly returning to life, and that means homeowners looking to sell are presented with the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the wait. Don’t unload your property in a down market – improve the value of your investment to increase your return when the market’s recovered.

In short – pimp your crib. Take this time to improve your home in the right ways and the market will reward your patience. That said, don’t just throw in a pool and expand the garage. This is a time for strategic crib pimping, not a time for creating a money pit.

Here are five home improvements that will make your property into prime real estate when the time is right.

Remodel the Kitchen

kitchen remodelJust don’t go overboard. The folks at HGTV estimate you’ll recoup from 60 to 120 percent of your investment, and that investment doesn’t have to break the bank to look good. In fact, the opposite is in order – buyers want you to be conservative.

A fresh look is great, but it shouldn’t make the kitchen seem alien when compared with the rest of the house. You can make it bigger, just don’t let it take over. Keep it simple with some fresh, modern paint and new, Energy Star appliances. With the Energy Star Rebate Finder, you can even save some money in the process.

Add or Improve a Bathroom

If your house only has one bathroom, add one. With HGTV estimating a recoup of 80 to 130 percent of the cost to add a second, bathroomthere’s little chance you’ll have anything to lose. You might gain a bit of heft in your asking price, though, and the home’s future residents will gain a second bathroom. They’ll be as happy as you are with this decision.

That said, you shouldn’t neglect that first bathroom. In fact, you shouldn’t neglect any bathrooms. A set of clean, modern bathrooms will make a positive impression on everyone who tours the home. An old bathroom with a broken toilet, on the other hand, leaves a different kind of impression.

Go Green

Improving the energy efficiency of a home is a sound investment in its worth to potential buyers. Efficiency upgrades are a fact of life in our evolving world, and the less a new owner has to do to bring their home up to par, the better.

windowsYou can start with Energy Star windows. HGTV estimates that you’ll recoup 60 to 90 percent of the $7,500 to $10,000 cost of replacing the windows in an average-sized home. The upgrade will also qualify you for a 10% green energy tax credit and potentially even more credits depending upon your state.

If you’re looking for a smaller investment in the home’s efficiency, look to its insulation. Most of a home’s energy is used in the heating and cooling of the interior, and investing in a thermal leak detector can show you exactly where you’re losing money.

If you really want to impress energy-conscious buyers, take it a step further and invest in a new, high-efficiency water heater and Energy Star qualified heating and cooling equipment – most buyers are well aware of just how important these upgrades are to an energy bill.

Go Greener with a Home Rainwater System

Home rainwater collection systems are becoming increasingly popular as the costs of the utility rise. These systems can be as simple or as complicated as you can imagine, and the rainwater collection systemextent to which a family would wish to rely upon one is completely up to them to determine.

For example, if you have a large property that requires lots of water, a rainwater collection system can be paired with an automatic sprinkler system to ease the burden that lawn care places upon your utility bill. More importantly, it can prevent potential buyers from worrying about the burden it will place on theirs.

Best of all, even the maintenance concerns of such a system are put at ease by the advanced flow capabilities of modern valves. Both you and the potential buyers can rest assured that contemporary systems like these require very little cost or effort to maintain.

It’s the Simple Things

In the end it’s the simple things that matter most – the simple things, and keeping it simple. New home buyers simply don’t want to take on the costs of caring for a pool or a hot tub. They don’t want to take on the responsibility of extensive landscaping, and they don’t want to feel obligated to use the gourmet stove that added thousands to the cost of the home.

Neither do buyers want to take on the responsibility of putting a new coat of paint on a worn wall. They don’t want to hire a plumber to fix the irregular water pressure, they don’t want to hire an electrician to rewire that ceiling fan you bungled and they certainly don’t want to replace a leaking and moldy roof.

They want a home – that’s why they’re home buyers. When you’re dreaming up new improvement projects to increase the value of a property while you bide your time on the market, just imagine what you’d want to buy (or not want to buy).

Inspiring Ways to Add Privacy to Your Yard

privacy fence

As a hot summertime is coming, we should take a proper care of our yard. It’s the only place where we can enjoy total peace and flamboyant nature. Can you imagine how amazing the feeling is when you come home exhausted from work and take a nap in your comfy hammock settled in the shade in front of your house? Our yards are our personal kingdom, a secluded getaway that we treasure and save only for ourselves. But, what happens when someone disturbs such harmony?

Over the course of time, people have become overly interested in other people’s lives and habits. If you have ever spotted your neighbor peeking through your fence, don’t despair. That happens to all of us. While some people just gave up, the other ones are still looking for most effective ways to add privacy to their yard. If you would like to make your yard more peaceful and creative, here are some inspiring tips to tickle your fancy.

Install a Fence

backyard fenceSetting the fence up is definitely the most traditional and effective way to enclose your yard. There is a really wide choice of fences, including their structure, shape and dimensions that all depend on your yard. However, you should definitely pay attention to the materials you are planning to use. Although white wood picket fence has been a dream of most house owners, you should think twice before setting it up. When installing such fences, you need to be ready for a huge commitment. You need to know how to maintain wood fence panels properly in order to make them look great. If you don’t want to spend a lot of time taking care of your fence, you should definitely choose one that is easy to maintain like powder-coated aluminum or vinyl.

Green up Your Yard with a Hedge

Some people consider walls and fences overly conservative and isolating. If they would make you feel confined in your own backyard, create privacy with beautiful hedgesmaybe installing a hedge is a perfect solution for you. Hedges have the same purpose as the most expensive fences or walls, adding both safety and aesthetical value to your yard. The choice of hedges is really wide and the most common division is into evergreen and deciduous ones. If you want to make your exterior more unique and creative, you could also combine several kinds of hedges with other plants and trees, which will add vivacity to your yard.

Opt for Delicate Lattice

If you feel that a traditional fence isolates you completely from your surroundings, you should look for alternative ideas. One of the most amazing ones is installing a delicate lattice, which has various purposes. It will seclude your yard perfectly and, since it doesn’t take up a lot of your yard, it can be installed everywhere.  Most importantly, lattice panels are easy to install and maintain. Setting them up, you will finally have an opportunity to grow your favorite flowering shrubs, climbing roses or tidy vines.

Personalize Your Favorite Nook

shade sailIf redecoration and reorganization of the entire yard is too complicated or expensive to you, you could also pick your favorite part of the yard and make it unique. Such a place should be provided with enough sunlight, shade and comfort. For example, you could look for shade sails online, as they are an amazing solution for both sunny and rainy days. You could install your favorite garden furniture, light fixtures and a comfy hammock under them and be sure that nothing could ruin your relaxation.

What we can conclude is that people who have a yard are really lucky. They are provided with an amazing opportunity to enjoy every spring or summer day in peace, isolated from the outdoor noise and views. That’s exactly why you need to add privacy to your yard. All you have to do is to be creative. You can play with various kinds of fencing, combine them and create a real heaven on earth. Following these tips, you will manage to create a safer yard and finally be able to completely relax.

Out of the world bathroom design ideas

Futuristic bathroom

If you are a keen admirer of futuristic designs, there is a possibility for a bathroom makeover according to your passions. Of course, all the hi-tech multimedia innovations are commonly used and applied in our living rooms, kitchens and study rooms. However, we are here to talk about bathrooms and I am here to give you an insight into the world of futuristic bathroom designs and as a living proof that it is functionally implementable.

Bathtub or shower cabin

This dilemma is not crucial to your futuristic design; any option that you choose offers plenty of innovative solutions. When bathtubs are concerned, they are highly customizable when it comes to shape and size. For example, a diamond shaped one will certainly make an appearance and easily become a center piece of your bathroom. Enriched with digitally controllable water level and temperature it will be at your service and ready for you whenever you programmed it to be. There are also models available that use their interactive surface to virtually color the water to your preference. Why not take a bath in azure blue of the Caribbean? On the other hand, shower cabins are even more customizable. Touch screen water flow and temperature control easily turns them into massage cabins and water therapy ones. Also, their designs are so customizable that you can practically fit them at any spot and angle, with foldable cabins and retractable taps.

LED bathtubs

Sink

Another item that can practically have any shape, color and place you want. Those that react to motions and shadows have been used for a long time now and they are upgraded by voice commands and temperature programmability. Also, the shapes and sizes of taps are practically limitless and can be adapted to any height preference. On top of that, a proper choice would significantly contribute to design in general. For example, dorf tapware with flowing curves and smooth bendswould fit nicely in practically any bathroom and give it a touch of class, besides futuristic appearance.

Tapware with curves and smooth blends

Light

Light fixtures are great atmosphere builders. Dimmable central fixtures of infinite shapes available, a color change feature, and various remote controllable desk and wall ones will enable you to build the atmosphere according to your current mood. This is a great feature, if you hate being blinded in the morning, just as I do, you will certainly cherish this.

Tiles

What is futuristic about tiles, you may ask. Well, the choice of material and shapes, to put it short. There are tiles available that clean themselves, and there are those that offer a 3D effect similar to that achieved in the best cinemas. So, you can make your bathroom appear twice as big and have it dried out by itself not more than 5 minutes after you finished your shower.

Futuristic comes with customizability and this is a great combination that anyone can make use of. The only possible problem is that you will spend even more time in you bathrooms. Luckily, out of pleasure, not need.

Going Oriental with Your Rugs

How to choose the right Oriental rugThe most beautiful thing about our incredible green planet is all the diversity that just seems to blossom everywhere. You may take literally any aspect and field of Earth and there is simply no way that you will come upon the same result twice. Human cultures and civilizations are, naturally, not excluded from this phenomenon. Yes, we are all different, but this, often controversial aspect of our society and our species in general, is at the same time what is best about us.

Every culture and every region has its own unique thing, something that separates them, something that sets it above everyone else. For example, if going for the classy and elegant suit, you will naturally go for a suit of Italian make, for the choice of your car there is no better advice than to buy German, but when the rugs are in question it is the Orient that is second to none. This is where east and west were always as one.

The Right Fit

Because of their dazzling beauty, oriental rugs have been a symbol of prosperity and one’s social status for centuries. Still, it is not Getting the Right Fit for your Oriental Rugenough to just select a random oriental rug and simply install it in your living room. There are several criteria that need to be satisfied prior to this, one of which is naturally the shape and the size of the rug. This step, although not as easy as it may seem, can be quite simple with the help of the proper research on the topic. By following just a couple of simple yet logical rules, you will be able in no time to pick the perfect rug size for your home.

The size and the shape of your oriental rug should mostly depend on three things. These factors are the size of your room, the furniture in the room and the room’s design. Although, sometimes it is quite easy to imagine the rug that you want and even if that same rug looks good in your mind, sometimes it will simply not be the same when you bring it home, as you imagined that it will. One of the little tricks, which may help you determine the perfect size is to align a bunch of old newspapers in your room, so that they cover the area that the aforementioned rug should later occupy. This way, you will be able to see exactly what it will look like in your room, size and position-wise.

An Integral Part of Your Room

Tips On How To Choose Your Oriental RugAlthough you may invest a lot of effort in selecting the rug that you like the best, it is crucial that you always have one thing in mind. Rug, your rug, should be one with the room, not be above or be hiding behind it, in any way. What this means is that in order to select the right color for your area rug, you need to always keep in mind both the texture and even the theme of your room, especially if you plan to design with oriental patterns in contemporary spaces.

While on the topic, people working for some of the most renowned online suppliers of quality rugs claim that there are various techniques that some of their clients use in order to select the perfect rug. One of the most interesting and at the same time most effective methods is to take a picture of your room prior to the purchase, and then take that picture with you when you go shopping. In this way, you’ll find out whether your room’s overall design can really benefit from adding an oriental flooring item or not.

As you can see, selecting a truly amazing oriental rug for your home is in no way easy. Still, it is one of the most important things for the general aesthetic impression of both your room and your home. The key thing here is to remain calm, do a proper research and show some genuine dedication to the matter at hands. With all this in mind, your perfect selection will be almost completely fail-proof.

5 easy kitchen and bath upgrades that take only hours to complete

Do your kitchen and bathrooms look a bit drab? If you don’t have the time or budget for a full remodel, there are still many simple updates you can do to refresh these spaces and invigorate each with impressive style. From affordable faucet updates to pretty paints, each takes one day or less to complete, instantly providing a dramatic effect.

kitchen and bathroom upgrade ideas

Freshen the faucet
Almost anyone who enters the bathroom or kitchen will use the faucet, which means it’s a functional focal point of the space. Installing a new faucet is a simple way to redefine interior design and reflect your own personal style. The new line of Kohler faucets available at Home Depot offers exceptional quality at an affordable price. For example, set the ambience in your bathroom with the Georgeson line of faucets, inspired by the Gatsby era with chic detailing and unique shapes to provide a decorative, eclectic touch. For those who prefer traditional silhouettes, the Mistos kitchen faucet’s soft lines and classic aesthetic provide a timeless, upscale look.

Update hardware and accessories
Cabinet hardware and other accessories do for a room what jewelry does for an outfit – they provide the finishing touches that really elevate the space. Fortunately, it’s simple and economical to swap out dated hardware for new handles, knobs and pulls. Popular metal finishes include brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze and chrome. For bathrooms, update accessories to match your new Kohler faucet – each line includes coordinating accessories like towel bars, showerheads and tub fillers.

Experiment with paint
Paint is one of the most affordable ways to dramatically change the look and energy of a space. If you have dated tile, research if tile paint is an option for your kitchen or bath. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color – a rich or vivid color on a focal wall can add instant style, like on the wall behind the tub or stove. Don’t forget the fifth wall: a fresh white ceiling instantly brightens the area and visually heightens the room, which can make the space feel larger and more modern.

Frame the mirror
Every bathroom has a mirror, and some kitchens and adjacent dining spaces feature mirrors as well. A mirror provides a focal point while reflecting light to make it appear brighter. But if you have a builder-grade mirror, you’re probably longing for more style. Instead of investing in a costly new mirror, simply add a new frame around your current one. You can buy a prefabricated frame or create one yourself fairly easily from supplies at your local craft store. Your boring old mirror will be transformed immediately into an upscale alternative.

Swap light fixtures and bulbs
If your current bathroom and kitchen light fixtures evoke nostalgia from a lost era, it’s time for a swap. Pick out a new overhead fixture to instantly dress up the room – modern chandeliers, track lighting and recessed lighting are popular options. For bathrooms, installing task lighting by the mirror can help streamline daily routines. Keep in mind, cool, bright white bulbs with a high color-rendering index (CRI) closely reflect natural light and therefore are a good option for bathrooms as well as cooking spaces.

Fire Up Your Living Room!

Have you always felt that your living room lacks excitement no matter what interior design idea you tried? Different wall color palettes, various furniture materials, shapes and styles, all those artworks carefully placed, interchanges of light and shadows, nothing seems to do the trick. You need a new flame. It’s high time you gave something completely different a shot. Fire up your living room atmosphere by implementing one of different fire pit and fire place solutions available. To make your choice easier we prepared a list of fire up solutions that are most popular on the market today.

Traditional Fire Place

fireplaceThe first think that comes to mind when you think about a traditional fire place are Christmas movies. The beautiful snowy white on the outside and a cozy, sparkling fire place made of bricks inside, with family gathered around having fun and enjoying the atmosphere. This kind of traditional approach to building fire places is very much sought after today, as well. Marble or brick fire places are the main pieces of many living rooms, while different electric ones too, which, in a combination with a right mantel can be easily incorporated in any traditional looking living room, improving the appearance and especially the atmosphere. Therefore, they are the best choice if you wish to achieve the above mentioned atmosphere from the movies, accompanied with suitable furniture and artwork.

Modern Fire Place

This should be your choice if you wish to add a touch of warmth to your living room that is of modern spirit, with the furniture used made of modern materials, such as metal or plastic. A fire place, electrical, gas or wood powered modern fire places will soften the atmosphere but will blend in perfectly if you choose a modern looking mantel to go along. With a TV set mounted on the wall above it, or a stereo and cinema system carefully placed, it will turn your living room into a more enjoyable and soothing looking multimedia center by breaking the sterility these dedicated rooms usually have.

Fire Pits

These igniters are the most modern of all three mentioned here and require a kind of a special treatment. This is due to their attractiveness and the fact that the attention which is focusedfireplace modern on them wherever installed makes them a center piece of any room. This is especially true when it comes to living rooms. Therefore, be careful. If you wish to use one of them to fire up the atmosphere, it would be smart to organize and arrange everything else in your living room after you chose among many of the fire pits available. For example, if you opt for a large fire pit positioned in the center of your living room, allow enough space for it to be clearly visible and arrange the room to even more emphasize its presence. On the other hand, if you prefer a milder effect, there are various less dominant pits that could be positioned practically anywhere in the room, providing that you have a suitable outlet for them. There are even small, portable versions which you can easily position, for example on your dining table, or anywhere you like, and as easily remove.

As you can see, the suggested solutions to fire up your living room can meet anyone’s needs. However, make sure you plan the renovation based on the one you choose and build the desired atmosphere in relation to it. In the end, enjoy your pleasurable and warm future days, this is why you started it in the first place!

5 Home Improvements To Make Your Home Energy Efficient!

5 tips to make your home energy efficient
homeenergyteam

If you are like many homeowners, you may cringe as you open your energy bill each month. With the rising costs of energy in many areas coupled with the need to use energy throughout the home on a regular basis, you may regularly see your energy costs rising. In some cases, high energy bills can simply be burdensome, and in other cases, they may be unmanageable. The good news is that there are several home improvements that you can make that will help you to improve energy efficiency in your home and lower your energy costs throughout the year. When you are making plans to complete your next home improvement project, thing about these energy efficient ideas.

Update Your Home’s Insulation

Your home’s insulation adds an important layer around the exterior of your home. While hidden from view, it is instrumental in keeping your climate-controlled air indoors and the external air out of your home. This has a dramatic impact on energy efficiency. Over time, some types of insulation can deteriorate or fall out of place inside the walls. Pests and rodents may also eat it, reducing its benefits. Updating your home’s insulation with quality materials will have a dramatic impact on energy efficiency in your home throughout the year.

Restore Your Home’s Roof

While insulation keeps climate controlled air inside the home, the roof is also critical in this function. It also can radiate heat from the sun away from the home for an additional benefit. When the roof is not in quality condition, it is far less effective in this area. Restoring the roof can yield great results, and there are several quality materials that you can use such as metal, wood shingles and shakes. Repainting a roof with a reflective coating is also a great idea that can yield cost-effective results.

Install Solar Panels

If you have a larger budget available to work with, you may consider installing solar panels on the roof of your home or in a large area of your yard that receives ample sunlight each day. Some homeowners will start with a small solar system to partially offset energy costs, and they may add onto the system over time. Others will install a full system that has the ability to produce all of the energy that the home uses on a regular basis.

Update Your Hot Water Heater

Another smart idea is to update your home water heater. If you have an outdated hot water heater, there is a good chance that it is not as energy efficient as many of the newer models on the market today. This is a rather affordable upgrade to make, and some of these models may even help you to reduce water consumption as well. For example, a tankless water heater may help you to conserve both energy and water in some cases.

Replace Your Appliances

If your budget allows, replacing older appliances can result in a considerable reduction in your energy costs. The appliances that use the most energy in a home are typically the HVAC system and the clothes dryer. Therefore, if you only have a limited amount of funds available, consider updating these appliances first if they are older in age. Other appliances that may need to be replaced, if your budget permits, are the washing machine, the refrigerator and the dishwasher. You may also update your electronics, such as the television and other major energy consumptive items. The newest models on the market are generally designed to be highly energy efficient in comparison to previous models.

High energy bills can be a burden to deal with, but there are options available to help you lower energy costs. These ideas each can provide you with long-term results that equate to lower energy bills throughout the year and a more eco-friendly home. Consider moving forward with several ideas to begin seeing immediate results in your energy costs.

How to get the perfect vanity stand

vanity stand

The clue to a vanity stand is in the name – vanity. It’s all about you! Therefore, your stand should be tailored to your personality, your home décor, and your favourite things.

It’s easy to clutter a vanity stand with unsorted makeup, unwanted items and general junk, making it less of a personal space for you and more of a storage area for your old things. However, this is a problem that’s easily fixable – read on for our tips on how to get a perfect vanity stand.

Choose the right one to begin with

When choosing a vanity stand for your bathroom, you need one that will hold everything you need it to but also one that will fit in with your bathroom’s overall design. It’s going to be the focal point of the room… but hopefully for all the right reasons. Decide on the colour, the style and the size of your vanity stand before doing anything else. Mix textures if you like as this could lead to a very striking look. Don’t be afraid to break tradition, either. For example, not everyone has a basin as part of a vanity stand, and nothing says that it’s a requirement. One thing you should focus your attention on is…

Mirrors and lighting

The mirror is almost certainly going to be the most important part of any vanity stand, so it needs to be in the right place and have enough light available to it. You can take advantage of natural light by placing your stand in a strategic area, or you can use artificial light – many people use a pink light to give a soft pastel tone to the stand, the items on it, and of course the person using them. Usually, people try to avoid overly harsh lights as it will accentuate their flaws in the mirror!

Storage space

If you’ve gathered a lot of make-up, jewelry etc over the years and can’t bear to throw any of it away, it might be time to invest in some new storage solutions.  Necklace and earring display stands simultaneously show off your priciest pieces whilst also placing them within easy reach. Things that aren’t as decorative, or are just plain functional instead, can go in the drawers below. Any leftover jewelry, or indeed other small items, can always go in jewelry boxes – this will instantly de-clutter things and add to a minimalist look.

Make-up arrangement

When organizing your makeup, it’s always best to throw away anything that’s too old or no longer needed. Try and downsize if you can – if you have several different bottles of the exact same nail varnish, think about giving some away!

Make sure that makeup you use every day is within the easiest reach. Also, clean up any make-up spills as soon as they happen – some of them stain, and that could prove to be a disaster later on.

There are no hard and fast rules as to what else belongs on a vanity stand – candles, ornaments, you’re free to experiment as much as you like. A vanity stand should be a calming, tidy, pleasant space for you, so be sure to take time out of your day to enjoy it once you’re done!
