Tips To Keep Your Tools In Tip Top Shape

From painting supplies to gardening and hand tools, buying well-made home improvement tools can help improve project results. The tools you use may be an investment, so you’ll want to take care of them to ensure they last for more than just one project.

tips to keep your home improvement tools clean

Painting tools

Painting is the easiest and most cost-effective way to transform a space or revive an outdated piece of furniture. The quality of your brushes and rollers is just as important as the quality of the paint. You’ll want to know how to clean and maintain them so they can be used again and again.

It’s important to clean paint brushes and reusable rollers immediately after use. A mixture of warm water and mild soap suds is the best cleaning solution for latex- or water-based paints. When cleaning oil-based paints, varnishes, lacquers and shellacs, closely follow the manufacturer’s instructions to select the proper cleaning solvent such as paint thinner or denatured alcohol. Consider using one set of synthetic brushes or rollers for oil-based products and another set for latex products.

Avoid soaking paint brushes in solvent or water as this can damage the bristles. A paint brush comb  is an easy way to keep your brushes in tip-top shape after cleaning. For best results, comb both the edge and center of the brush to prevent paint buildup during use and extend the life of any brush. You can find step-by-step videos on YouTube that demonstrate how to clean paint brushes.

It’s also important to store brushes properly. Hang brushes when storing them; never store a paint brush on its tip, which can result in “curling.”

After washing used roller covers, string them on rope or dowels to aid in drying. To ensure a nice, smooth finish the next time you have to paint, don’t stand the paint roller on its end or lay it on its nap. Be sure to dry and store your roller covers with care.

Gardening tools

gardening toolsAfter a day spent doing yard work, it’s important to clean off any shovels, hoes or rakes. Moist soil on metal surfaces can result in rust so hose off tools and towel dry them after each use. Use a wire brush or wire-steel pad attached to a power drill to remove rust or other debris from metal tool parts. Make the most of your storage space or garage and hang garden tools by their handles to prevent damage and avoid clutter.

Store small garden tools like shears, trowels and soil scoops in a sand-filled trough to keep them organized and in top-notch condition. Fill a 13-inch by 15-inch plastic or galvanized container with sand to within an inch of the top, pour in 1/4 cup of motor oil and stir. Place the tools in the sand with the handles out. The sand helps the tools stay clean and sharp while the oil prevents any rust buildup. Keep the container in your garage or shed to avoid the elements.

Hand-held workshop tools

Quality hammers, screw drivers, cordless drills and the like can be costly. Given enough time, rust will damage metal permanently. For rust removal on hand-held tools andworkshop tools corroded nuts and bolts, soak them in vinegar for a few days and rinse with warm water. Another way to remove rust is to gently scrape the tool with a wire brush.

When cleaning power tools, wear heavy duty gloves when handling and disconnect all power cords. With a toothbrush, clean around any switches that may interfere with the proper operation of the machine. If you are cleaning a chainsaw, jigsaw or similar power tool, use an air compressor to blow out any sawdust that’s collected within the crevices.

A little extra time spent cleaning and storing tools after a home improvement project can keep them looking and working their best. Protect your tool investments and be the ultimate weekend warrior with proper storage and organization.

How to Buy a Backup Generator

How to Buy a Backup Generator

By Jason Carpenter for The Workbench Life

There are numerous reasons for a power outage to happen in your town, but there’s no reason for you to be unprepared. A backup generator can provide power to your entire home to keep you and your family safe and comfortable.

The first step is to write down all the appliances that you want to power in a blackout. The most common (and urgent) items needed to stay powered up during a blackout are:

  • Refrigerator
  • Well water pump
  • Basement sump pump
  • Minimal lighting
  • Electric range or microwave oven
  • Furnace
  • Freezer

If you’re one of those homeowners who wants to have all their comforts available in a blackout, make a second list of helpful electrical items such as:

  • Computer equipment
  • Air conditioning (either central system or window units)
  • Television(s)
  • Gaming systems

Once you’ve come up with your list of electrical items, you can calculate the total wattage required to power those items (refer to the tag on each of the units). Now you know how much power you’ll need in a generator.

Gas-Powered Portable Generator

This type of backup generator is great for providing power to essential electrical items during a power outage, but you’ll have to start it up manually and keep enough fuel on hand to keep it running in a prolonged blackout. You’ll have to plug your appliances (via long extension cords) into this type of unit, which typically has anywhere from two to four outlets.

Tip: To avoid running electrical cords, you can have an electrician install a subpanel that will allow the generator to power entire circuits in your home.

A generator with a 3,200-watt output costs around $500, while a 10,000-watt output generator can cost up to $1,500. Those with wheels and key-starts cost a bit more.  Some have tanks that hold enough fuel to run the generator for only a few hours, where others gas tanks to keep the generator running for 10 hours or more. Remember to plug in a carbon monoxide detector while using a portable generator.

Tip: Get one with wheels. Generators are very heavy and you don’t want to mess around with one without wheels in the dark.

Standby Generator

This type of generator sits at the ready, buried or installed next to your home. Its sensors detect a lack of electricity coming into the home and start the unit automatically. They are typically fueled by natural gas or propane and start at $5,000 (with installation). If you want to run your entire home during an outage, or if you live in an area common to power outages, this is the choice for you.

With a standby generator, you don’t need to worry about running extension cords across your floors. Because of its dedicated fuel source, you won’t need to worry about storing enough gasoline in your home or garage. One last, important benefit of the standby generator is that it’s far quieter than a portable unit.

However, installing a standby generator is not a DIY project — you’ll need to hire a professional electrician to hook up the generator and install a transfer switch and subpanel. Price is another major difference from the portable unit, as standby generators start around $5,000 and can exceed $15,000 once you consider wattage output and installation costs. Generators on the lower end of the price scale typically have a 7,000 watt output, and those on the higher end have 30,000-watt output — enough to power an entire home and all of its electrical appliances and gadgets.

Home fire protection equipment

fire extinguisherMany people don’t even think about fire safety at home. But the bad news is that there are many injuries and deaths caused by fire at people’s homes. Most of the accidents start from the kitchen as a result of unattended cooking. There are also many fatal cases caused by forgotten burning cigarettes or heating equipment. The reasons could be many but what is important is to start thinking about fire safety at home and not let such awful accidents happen. There are ways to protect your home and family from fire, considering fire equipment that will help you feel safer at home.

Smoke Detectors

These little tools are more important that you can imagine. They have been saving thousands of people every year. It’s essential that there are smoke detectors in every house or apartment, at least one per floor or preferably one in every room. Make sure the detector in the kitchen is not attached to the ceiling right over the oven and that you turn your kitchen extractor on when you cook. Otherwise the smoke detector might be triggered for no reason.

Batteries of smoke detectors run out pretty fast sometimes, so make sure you check and change them regularly.

Fire extinguisher

Having a fire extinguisher at home is not compulsory but it’s surely recommended. It’s important to know in advance how to work with it, otherwise you might end up trying to handle both a fire extinguisher and panic at the same time, which can’t normally result well. Make sure it’s in a proper shape and good to use.

There are different types of fire extinguishers, so when you buy one, make sure it’s appropriate. For example, you don’t want to use a water fire extinguisher on a fire caused by electrical items. The most suitable ones for domestic use are foam or powder extinguishers because they cover all the classes of fire danger.

Fire Plan

It’s necessary for every home to have a fire plan. Every member of the family should know how to get everyone out of the house in case of a fire. A fire plan should be practiced every once in a while in order to make sure everyone can handle a terrible situation like this.

First Aid Kit

Not just in case of a fire, a first aid kit is more than compulsory to have at home. You might need one in multiple situations, so it’s necessary to have at least one kit at home. A first aid kit won’t prevent fire but it’s an important part of an escape plan in case there is a huge fire and you have to leave your house or apartment. Somebody might need help and a first aid kit might be essential at some point.

Home Sprinkler System

These days such systems have become less expensive, which makes them easier to afford. It’s a good idea to have an automatic home sprinkler system that sprays water in case of a fire and thus keeps you and your family safe and calm. This is perhaps the most effective way to protect your home from fire.

There are many ways to protect your home from fire, providing your house or apartment with the right fire safety equipment. Taking care of this equipment is essential too, since it would be useless if it doesn’t work properly at the moment you need it the most. Having the proper equipment and also being cautious about your safety by making sure you don’t forget your home appliances are on and you don’t leave burning cigarettes, the risk decreases significantly.

How to Pimp Out Your Grown-Up Toolbox

How to Pimp Out Your Grown-Up Toolbox

Don’t you think it’s about time you learned the difference between a flathead and a phillips?  Did we mention how much easier it is to hang a picture when you’ve got a level?

Level:

What to look for: A small torpedo level can handle most household projects (like hanging a picture or mounting a shelf); look for a magnetized model that’s easy to read. Got visions of more serious jobs, like laying a new floor? Opt for a 2- to 4-foot one.

Why you’ll (learn) to love it: You’ll spend less time eyeballing and more listening to your partner making jokes about being “well hung.” Do you need any better reasons?
