1. Prep

Before you begin building a shed, you need to determine the size and style of your shed. Consider the door and windows you want. Do you need a ramp to get large equipment in and out?

2. Build the Foundation

Usually, you can build a wood base on top of concrete blocks set on gravel. However, if your yard has a steep slope or you live in an area with high winds, you’ll want to use a concrete mix to build on.  

Start by building the perimeter of the foundation frame. Then, place the concrete blocks in the corners. If it’s level, you can begin setting the blocks. Using gravel under the blocks helps with drainage.

When the blocks are set, you can place the foundation on top. Finish by adding joists and sheathing. 

3. Frame the Walls and Roof 

With the foundation secure, you can start building the walls. As you construct and secure the walls, install any windows you want. When all the walls are in place, you can nail them to the corners. 

Next, you can build the roof. There are several different ways to frame a roof. They include using:

• A ridge beam
• Common Rafters
• Collar ties
• Roof trusses

You can use the shed floor to help measure the roof frame. When you finish the frame, secure it to the walls. 

Then you can add siding and roofing. Plywood is a common siding option, as is oriented standard board (OSB). Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing option. 

4. Add the Door and Finishes

Now you can install the door to your front wall.
